Weird and unusual synths

Post by Horace » Sun Aug 22, 2010 4:28 pm

"GPX 4 function electronic organ
Model KB810"
Reminds me of those old Casio VL tones. The internet yielded nothing on this little guy. Generates some nice square waves, and the vibrato isn't too bad. The rubber pads underneath the keys are starting to deteriorate unfortunately.
Thoughts? Anyone else have any strange synths lying around?

I found this awhile back in a family member's storage unit. Dirty and probably doesn't record to tape any longer (haven't tried yet), but it does make some neat cheesy '80s toy sounds...guns, explosions, synth stabs even. Ugly as h**l though.

Baby blue buttons, what were they thinking. I found this old gemini mixer at a pawn shop, and it has 6 "sound effects" buttons along the bottom, including a ufo and a tron blast. I'm always afraid I'll hit them by accident while recording and have an 8bit fart stuck in the middle of my track

I was aware. Just pointing out in a less obvious manner that we should be using proper titles in posts. ;)

I did. :P
I just think if someone wants to post a legitimate topic (which I think this is, it would be cool to see all the weird s**t we pick up!), the post should at least kind of hint at what it is; otherwise, it will probably end up buried or suggested on a digital audio tape recommended topic.

In addition to that, I don't understand how "WAT" can portray "what" or what is usually phonetically pronounced "whut" or "wut." In American English, at least, the above would be pronounced in the same fashion as the word "watt," which really makes no sense at all- especially since this is, I think, meant to align with an African American sort of colloquial pronunciation, which would definitely align more with "wut," as it is more commonly spelled.
Primarily, I don't think "WAT DAT" falls under grammar, but more likely spelling (although it is a grammatical issue in a secondary way). If we substitute the appropriate spellings for these words, we'd get "WHAT THAT," which is really only lacking the apostrophe and the "s" on the end of "what." So, that is a relatively tiny grammatical issue compared to the rather severe spelling issues.

All of that aside- this is a fascinating thread, and people should start posting more pictures of interesting devices!

It was supposed to be funny, not watts, no African American slurs, nor am I unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the English language. Just funny. Since it offended so many I took it out of the topic title entirely.

OH! I forgot to mention, I looked up the patent number [1028727] on the back of the keyboard [op picture], and it's a design for a wagon wheel from 1912

General Synths is Serious Business. ;)

There are few things more annoying than vague thread titles, thanks for fixing this one up.
