A good place to start would be to find out what these guys are using in their setups and see if there's any one synth they all use. Also are you looking to do software or hardware? I think in terms of hardware an analog modelling synth would probably be the most flexible, like an Alesis Ion.

Just saying. I see that a lot on the rap sites.

"What drum machine is this guy using, it sounds awesome" and it's a link to the same guy making a track in his basement.

So now we have the same videos posted 3 times throughout VSE.
