Ensoniq DP4 broken encoder / jog wheel fix

Post by gosh » Fri Apr 15, 2011 4:19 pm

So I’ve been meaning to post this for a little while in case someone has the same trouble as me. I couldn’t find any info the net when I was looking.

I recently bought an Ensoniq dp4 with a broken encoder / jog wheel for a good price figuring I could fix the encoder. Upon opening discovered the encoder was made by Bourns [part number ECW1D-C32-BC0024 ]. Bourns don’t make this part number and the next closest (same spec but without a flatted shaft) was only available on a very long wait.
So I ordered ECW1J-C28-BC0024 from Mousers (about £6 each plus around £10 shipping to UK) and fitted that and….it works a treat. The shaft is slightly shorter so use a dab of either glue or blue-tac to keep the knob on the end but DP4 is back to full health and sounding excellent.

I bought this after a heavy dose of plastikman infused techno acid listening and I’d always read good things. After seeing plastikman lug it out for his 2010 tour I figured there must be something to this box, and well yeah it’s those lovely dark reverbs and echo’s that are all over his early work. Yay!

Anyway, now you know!

Thanks for posting. I use my DP/4 easily as much as my H3000 and it's a really underrated machine, good to know there's still some spare parts around for it.
