lowest prodution run of a major synth manufacturer

Post by princefan3 » Sat Apr 30, 2011 8:58 am

Hi all ......was just interested to know the answer to the above. recently got hold of a emu emulator II and the
production was only 3000 units.

would this be regarded as a low volume run, when we talk about the majors korg, roland etc

10,000 units keep popping up.was wondering...cheers

Hartmann Neuron : Roughly 500
Prophet T-8 : Rumored 300-500

etc, etc, etc.

There's plenty of synths that hover in tbe 1000-2000 zone; especially if you distinguish between major revisions and limited color scemes.

Less than a dozen single-keyboard Prophet 10's were made/sold.

this information really brings home how lucky we are, in actually owning these machines. if we consider
that they were distributed/advertised perhaps worldwide.

and then you have to try and gauge how many have been junked, or broken up.

Back in the day, that was not too bad a run actually. Before the DX7, the world champion for synth production was the Minimoog, with about 12,000 units produced.

The Fizmo Rack would be a good guess; there were almost certainly no more than 200 of those built, and not a whole lot more of the keyboard version. The Fizmo lines at the factory had only been running for about four months when Creative merged them with E-mu and shut down all Ensoniq production.

I wonder how many Avatars and ARP 16-voice pianos were built?

Back in my obsessive eBay scanning days, I noted that an ARP Avatar would come up relatively frequently. I even bought one. I don't know how many were made, but if it was a very small number then most people were unsatisfied with them between 2000 and 2007.

Synths I always wanted but VERY rarely came up:

Multivox MX-3000
EML Poly Box
Korg Sigma
Korg PS-3300
Paia Proteus 1
Roland SH-5
ARP Quadra
The CS-70M/80Ms don't seem very common
The Oberheim 2/4/8 voices

The Gleeman Pentaphonic Clear is always described as rare, but I've seen one on eBay. The Crumar Spirit is also described as rare, but I've seen them come up several times!

The big mystery for me is that I've heard that there's a fair amount of VCS3s out there, but I don't know if I ever saw ONE come up on eBay.

I don't even think there was an 80M... now that's rare!

Eight in total according to Pete Forrest's A-Z. I've seen one, but didn't dare touch it. It was perched above a Neuron, opposite an early PPG modular (very rare) and a PS-3200. Hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. I could have creamed myself, but managed to leave with my trousers more or less intact.
