Moog MP201 discontinued

Post by calaverasgrande » Thu Sep 08, 2011 9:14 pm

Such a bummer. While it is kinda expensive when compared to using Volta or some other software with a computer and an audio interface, it does thing that no other device I know of does. And it's built like a tank.
I hope they at least get the v3.0 (or 2.5?) out.

I sure hope it is not the end of the line for such a product. I've been wanting a 201 for a while now. I would much prefer a desktop version. I hope that's where they go with it.

yeah I have been noticing that the majority of MP201 users dont even put them on the floor. They have them up on a table next to all their other modular stuff. It would make sense to keep the price the same or cheaper and add a few more CV outs (and ins?).

It's still damn expensive. Even if I can afford it, I'd feel sort of ashamed of paying that sort of money... No wonder that they don't seem to sell many.

But i do want one... Let's see if they go on sale :(

I had an MP-201 that I used with my Voyager but I recently sold it.

I can see the appeal of a desktop version but it would still best be used with a foot pedal or some other controller. 4 lfos etc in a box is great but being able to modulate the rates or whatever by different ammounts in real time was where the real magic was. I certainly got some interesting sounds.

The problem for me was, that while it wasn't that difficult to use, it was still very much a device that needed a lot of programming from the menus, and I'd say that programming the tracking generator on an alesis micron is more intuitive and fun and than using the mp-201.

I realised that if I was going to program in menus, I might as well just explore some of the extra modulation possibilites hidden in the Voyager's own menus, because the Voyager in itself has depths of power and sounds I've yet to hear.

I think If moog came up with a a new mp-201 that had some knobs giving basic hands-on setup for each channel it could have more appeal. I'm guessing the stock wasn't selling through.

Oh yea. Crawling around on the floor to program this thing seems like it might have limited enjoyment value.

I had one - didn't like it, but then, I really didn't get it to work right either. I wanted to use it as a MIDI to CV. Tried to update OS with limited success too. I bought it second hand for $250 (mint in box with all the packaging) and sold it after 6 months for about the same price. Then I bought a Kenton Solo MIDI to CV and it worked flawlessly. The MP201 was far too quirky for me, but if they did another version (tabletop) that ironed out all the bugs, I'd reconsider.

it does have a very dense interface. The menu is tricky. It took me about a week to understand it, and a month to get to the place where I can make it do what I want. The idea of such a device is a great example of what makes Moog so Moog. The devil is in the details though. The OS and interface still need revision.
I think it also suffered from feature creep. Midi to CV should be a seperate box from your foot controlled LFO. Though I use midi to clock my LFOs, it is the only midi cable in my setup. If it had din sync I would use that instead.

I sincerely hope this means another CV controller box is out soon. I prefer to spend my synth money on American products!

Is there anything else on the market that has midi clock sync LFOs, Envelopes, and modulates CV and midi CCs?

Well, the Flame Clockwork does midi clock sync LFOs and CV modulation.. sort of. not quite the same thing though.

I have one and love it.

In my live rig I use it to control the mod wheel on my LP via midi and also to send an s/h control voltage to the frequency input on my fooger ring mod.

It's got a great feeling pedal and amazingly good build quality, I expect i'll be using it for many years!

bummed that it didnt sell for them but also feeling fairly smug that I was smart enough to get one.

Silent Way and Volta both do a great job of it, although I guess that's not really what you had in mind.

I plan on getting a second 828 just to use for Volta in my studio. But I refuse to use a computer live.
Even if you put aside the reliability issue (he types from his macbook pro) I HATE watching laptop musicians.
