Opening synth sound for Erasure's Victim of Love

Post by Vertical » Wed Feb 15, 2012 4:03 pm

I am not sure what kind of sound it is, perhaps a string type sound? Sounds like pizzicato on a violin? But it might not be.

I am wondering if anyone has any tips on how to program such a sound. I am assuming something close or similar can be programmed on any standard 2 osc subtractive?

Sounds like a short analog string sound like you said, but it has a flanger or chorus on it as well.

Just because Vince is seen with a Casio synth doesn't mean a Casio was used in the recording. However the sound seems to me plausible to have come from a Casio. It sounds like it has some delay on it too.

Agreed ... highly highly likely digital, regardless. Think I recall seeing a pic of Vince w/ 4
stacked CZ101's at some point, as well. Funny that when synths and sounds get into high registers, a lot of the defining qualities of the synth are kinda obscured.

Also, hadn't seen that vid in ages ... read once that apparently Andy Bell was scared shitless throughout
the vid while filming.

OK, that makes sense I guess, because part of the reason I ask is that I am not sure if I have ever heard an analog synth make that stringy type of sound. I came here to ask you experts. So anyone disagree that it is not possible to make such a sound from an analog subtractive?

You could make a similar sound on subtractive. But probably not exactly spot on IMHO. And the basic oscillator shapes saw, square, tri etc don't seem to match up that exact timbre like a digital synth can. But basically its a pluck-y pizzicato type sound and can totally be faked on a subtractive synth using a small amount of decay on the amp envelope, little bit of sustain and release, then running through a delay. The original has that weird little attack transient at the beginning that you can try to fake it with a small amount of pitch envelope with a fast attack but not zero.

I hear a stringy sound (with chorus or flange as someone else suggested) - and with maybe a slight touch of an attack of a kinda-piano-ish-type sound? Agreed that it could be Casio.

And getting a bit off topic... but - Ooh! Ooh! Vince with stack of 101s is one of my favorite photos!
