Casio going pro again?

Post by bendragon » Fri Feb 24, 2012 9:24 pm

Was flicking through a shop and noticed this synth with "TBC" in its price field.

I had to double take because it said it was a Casio - I thought it was an error on the page since its not Casio's usual black plastic mess (I actually thought it was a Roland at first glance). Casio seem to have hit their head rather hard.

The XW-P1. Programmable drawbar organ with rotary speaker, key click, vibrato and percussion settings - programmable monophonic "lead" synthesizer (with two VA oscillators, HP/LP VA filter, two PCM oscillators, Noise Oscillator and external input with two EGs and some form of LFO), phrase sequencer, programmable arpeggiator, 13 track sequencer, programmable layered textures, real-time LCD display and 400 editable PCM tones.

For a sub £1000 performance/controller/workstation (rumoured $699) it appears to be well thought out.

I like Casio's CZ/FZ/VZ synths and always wanted them to make a modern version - although this is no where near what I, and many others, want in terms of a new Casio Synth, its a step in the right direction.

Would be great if they did go pro again. They could remake the VZ-1 with a better interface

The XW-G1 is reported to have access to CZ sounds.

Jesus, are you telling me I might be able to buy a Casio synth that doesn't need the batteries changed every 2 months?

Hopefully it wont just be the original 64 presets. :)

Yes :o

Though it can run on D-Cells. I think Casio Keyboards are the only things that actually use D-Cells anymore.

They're actually samples of CZ sounds. There is no PD synth engine in there.

Thank you, Casio! Although I wouldn't say EVERYTHING they've done has been unprofessional. The Privia was a rather nice machine.

Starting to wish I bought one of those instead of my Yamaha NP-30.

I also like the space they added for a laptop, iPad, or maybe a Kaoss Pad :)

I was a little cheesed out by the ipad holder, but I think a kaoss pad or some big analog pedal would look nice up there. Maybe even a small mixer?

I have a hard time envisioning a modern synth from Casio that isn't a noob keyboard or a bad arranger. Definitely checking this one out.

All I know is that someone forced a tshirt sporting the logo of their "new" professional synth at NAMM. I wear it a lot. On weekends.

The sequencer seems very very fun.

Kind of a hard choice between the 2 actually.

HEX in the P1 is a sort of D-50 thing.
G1 has more monosynth controls and sampling.

Wish they had aftertouch, would make them great controllers.
