Pre-CS80 Vangelis in his studio clip
Videoheads Amsterdam, whoever they are, has done it again and released a vintage Vangelis clip in his studio. Must be a collector of some sorts as they already had really rare videos.

Re: Pre-CS80 Vangelis in his studio clip
Strange that it says "Vangelis in a Paris studio preparing material for his album "See You Later". Of course "See You Later" didn't surface until 1980. But i did hear that he conceived ideas for the album around 1975, in between Heaven & h**l and Albedo 0.39.
The music sounds nothing like the album that appeared in 1980, but the music in the video is vaguely similar in tone to Etends Tu Les Chiens Aboyer? (Can you hear the barking dogs) and the Rossif periods in the early 70's.
Interesting video though!

Never trust a man with no shirt on.
But actually this was very nice to listen to. I agree it doesn't seem a whole lot similar to the later 'See You Later' but I suppose Vangelis does what Vangelis does.

I wish I had a synth-cave like Vangelis. Also love how he used "samples" of real orchestral sounds together with the analog synths. Like the rythm crashes and whatnot.
I also have a bootleg of one of his famous "dual CS-80" concerts from 1980. He had this heavyduty rack with two CS-80's stacked on top of eachother, and played them both at the same time. Amazing how fast he changes the sounds around completely, he'll usually change the sound on one CS while doing a slow ringmod sweep on the other. And still it sounds nice, there's a recurring theme that comes and goes. He changes from the famous brass sound to string pads and harmonic bell sounds in a jiffy.
He plays a grand piano for most of the concert, though.

So obviously he had a modified B3. Is it just run through massive amounts of effects or is it triggering something else? It doesn't sound like a Hammond at all.

I think he uses distortion and a MASSIVE reverb on the hammond.
I'd like to know what the "church organ" keyboard is..probably some cheap combo organ thingie? Sounds cool with the reverb.

That's an Elka Tornado IV combo organ from the early '70s. It's an electronic organ, not a reed organ.
Here's a picture of a Tornado IV with a fake wood-grain (plastic) top:

The Vangelis clip posted above probably dates from late 1973 or 1974.

It's funny, if you only know his Blade Runner and chariots of fire greatest hits stuff, you wouldn't imagine him to be such a great organ player. He's a top class pianist aswell.
Re: Pre-CS80 Vangelis in his studio clip
Thanks for chiming in Micke. I doubt anyone could have identified that Elka. It has almost the same looks as the Yamaha CP20-30. From comments I read, the clip is around the time of his album 'Earth'.

Great clip, thanks for posting that! I wish I step into a time machine and be fly on the wall in his studio. (:

Damn those drum beating hippies at the beginning..can't..watch..
Edit: having braved those first 1,5 minutes, I'll have to say you'd have to be as stoned as those drummers to actually like this stuff. I prefer Vangelis when he's not just improvising like a madman, really.
The other organ clip was at least musical.

Re: Pre-CS80 Vangelis in his studio clip
These vids look like a very long drawn out opening to some p**n flick. Can you see Vangelis allowing anyone else to score his own p**n movie? They probably had to edit in some f**k' at the end cuz he forgot why he was there in the first place.
