Synthi Info and Tips

Hey gang,

I'm tickled to say that there's now a borrowed Synthi AKS in my world for an extended stay. Unfortunately, the ring mod seems busted, but other than that, it's in superb shape (pics will follow).

I'm on the hunt for any info and tips.

Lucky man! About 4 months ago, I picked up a Synthi A that wasn't working, and it's been with a repair guy the whole time since. He got it to power up, and I've fiddled with it for about 15 minutes total, to set-up patches and help him test it. He called today and said it might be ready this weekend. I'm chomping at the bit.

Find the original Synthi manual online, it'll teach you loads about the grid patching system and how to make great sounds. I used it to learn a software version a while ago.

VCS3 and Synthi manuals should be the ones you need. Btw, you can't make those famous Jarre SFX sounds without using a delay unit aswell. One of his fave ways to use it was to insert new pins to alter the sounds totally while it was droning along on its own. He also uses the joystick heavily for LFO speed or several parameters at once to completely f**k up the sound and go back to center again.

I can see that I will want to explore using gate/cv with this baby. Are there any cheaper alternatives to the gorgeous stuff by Digitana?

PS: the AKS built-in keyboard/sequencer is not working properly.

This fellow is in Toronto and would probably make you one. I can't see it costing very much. You could also make your own.

My regular tech just told me he can do what I need. He's got +25 yrs experience, and has fixed some Synthis in the past. Happy, happy!

Absolutely not. For that money, I'd get an Xpander, a Jupiter 4, and an EML 100 or Andromeda (not that I have the dough, mind you ). It's an incredible instrument, though - maybe I'll order a new one for Christmas, so I can play with it... in 2019.

All the sounds, with the exception of the piano, are from a mid-70s AKS Synthi
