Prophet 12 Rack!

Post by ColorForm2113 » Sun Oct 20, 2013 5:33 am

prophet 12 rack
Maybe now I can afford one. I was hoping for something more like the 08 Rack but at least it has more knobs than the poly evolver rack.

It's still in development though, so we will see where this goes

Anybody that owns the keyboard want to weigh in on if that looks like it would be a sufficient amount of control to program it fairly easily.
My modular so far: Q104, Q106, Q107, Q108, Q109 x2 , Q116, Q118, Q127 w/Q140, Q130, STG Wave Folder, playing with Moog Voyager, VX-351, CP-251, MF-104M (x2 STEREO!)

Actually according to some other forums, That's exactly how much LOL. I think that's a little high for only having 8 or so knobs. Like I said though, we'll to wait and see how quick the workflow is on the front panel.

Well, I'd probably get a rack of the 8 before the 12 anyway. Sure the 12 is expensive, but that thing has got some fancy chips and features.

Oh man, with all the knobs removed I can see the Pro 12 Rack Hater's Club is gonna have lots of members :ugeek:
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

This is not a rack, but a desktop module. A rack would not have wood ends, and the outputs would be on the opposite of the front panel, instead of the top/small side like this one. It's a big difference when you try to fit it into a rack...

But it seems nice for a desktop module!

Yes, I realized that after making the thread. I thought it would be both (like 08) and then looking back saw it was a desk top. It's still in development so it may change

The link you posted presented it as a rack, so it was easy to just copy the title without thinking about it...

As far as I can see, the keyboardless version of the Prophet 08 has a partially shallow "top" to help connect cables [and the possibility to choose between rack ears and wood ends], but it would still be difficult to place it in a rack right underneath a deeper unit. I know you can get ¼" cables with a 90 degrees angle, but I never saw midi cable like that... It would be so useful, though!

Edit: The Roland JP-8080 has nailed it on this:

the prophet 08 came with wood ends and rack attachments so it is very likely this will be the same...

That is a very sexy piece. That's what's needed in the mix.
Lack of knobbage aside, I would expect to do all my tweaking from whatever is hooked up to this.

I'm trying to remember if soundtower's soft editor has any MIDI learn functionality.....
Or maybe there's an assignment list in the manual and it's up to me to program the controller.....
And anyone have any clues on external control- like how it works for the Prophet '08 Synthesizer Module?

It's nice of DSI to provide both in the original packaging and not oblige us to buy the other option separately!

You can get 90 degree din plugs. I once bought one and wired it to a MIDI cable for the very reason you mention.

The JP-8080 does indeed solve the problem for rack users, but on the downside, I find it a bit awkward to reach the connections when used as a desktop module (especially as it has two MIDI ins for different purposes and I keep needing to replug).

Will be interesting to see how the new Prophet turns out. Maybe DSI have put out this sneak peek to see what the reaction to the smaller knob count would be.

Having to rely on any SoundTower editor is a scary proposition :(

Sorry for highjacking the thread, but I have never heard of din plugs: where do I find that?
