The more I think of it, the more probable to me is that Roland simply couldn't make deadline. Hence revealing AIRA after the NAMM - to buy some time, especially with System 1, which still looks unfinished. They probably just wanted to have SOMETHING to show people and thought "we can always make firmware upgrade". Which is true - they can.

Doubtful: marketed to dance music community, so why not make the splash there at (arguably) the biggest dance music gear show there is? All these instruments were finished and shown to dealers, etc. weeks ago, including many at NAMM (who were sworn to secrecy).

Has there been any official word from Roland that they may release a 707 sound pack or any others? I've yet to see it and would love to know for sure. If so, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't charge for the upgrade (ugh!).

If they've really paid attention to detail with the component modelling, and it seems like they have, then they could be fully modelling the way the sample playback is done on a 909 and also on 7x7 if/when those banks arrive. There's more than one way to do sample playback / interpolation and not all converters sound the same so if that's part of the emulation it's not just a case of bung the sample in there and squeeze it out.

If Roland knew that it would/might add 707 sounds, why not name the box TR-X or something rather than "8".

Ahhh so if the rumors of 707 additions are true i may pick up a TR-8 later.

But it's also a TR-909 emulator. So if they're going to add 707 sounds, the name starts to make less and less sense. Here's my guess: the 808 is arguably the most beloved and coveted of its rhythm machines, so in order to get the most bang for its marketing buck, Roland went with a name that was intended to invoke the 808. Just one man's opinion....

Seems pretty obvious to me.
Besides, I thought we were all marketing geniuses...when it comes to what Roland should be doing.....

If new sounds are sold as an "update" I don't want to pay for them.
If they are sold as an "add-on" I would.

And I'll be the earliest of early people happy that ANY UPDATE isn't being released as 2.0, with a slightly new body (or color or 'limited run' or exclusive or anniversary, etc..) 2 months after the initial drop.

Cause that's been the trend.

I was thinking about whether or not we'd see anniversary/special editions of this, I wouldn't rule it out.

Yes, but the other part of my post, which you didn't quote, is the important part. They chose a name that invokes the 808 -- rather than the 909 -- because the 808 is probably Roland's most beloved drum machine. They could've called it the TR-9, but didn't. Why? Because among Roland's fanbase, the TR-808 is a kind of "holy grail."

I wasn't really pointing that out to you, but I mean to say:
The name is strictly the throw back and MY LAWD - what if they actually used....the exact name + something else.....
Like they did with Jupiter or Juno or....SH or....

I think they could have gone with TR-10-1 or AIRA TR 10 series....
The TR-8 sounds weird in any other context than the one you are suggesting.

I must admit the TR-8 seems like a step in the right direction though....but this system 1.......

I can see how this might be cool if it's a digital-type-modular like the Nord G3 Modular. But this 'plug-out' feature makes me suspect this synth will have more in common with the M-Audio Venom than the System 100/Other Roland classics. In the sense that you'll need a computer to get the maximum functionality out of it.

Worst of all that filter sounds suspiciously like the c**p one from the Gaia. Say it ain't so, Roland.

BTW Why can't Roland just reproduce the Juno's!?
h**l, even the Alpha Junos!

My very first synth was a 106....it had the infamous lost voices problem, the parameters would jump values and the outputs were a bit scratchy....BUT I LOVED IT. Mostly due to the sound. I still regret selling it to this day

I'd be jumping for joy if Roland re-released just the chorus from the Juno's as a standalone FX module.

PS: I'd be a little less critical if Korg wasn't releasing tons of analog gear. It's like Korg is at the opposite end of the spectrum from Roland--they're not only releasing analog gear we crave but resurrecting classics that we didn't ever expect but damned if we aren't excited

Just pre ordered one end of march for me...will go nice with the 707...lots and lots of sliders...and chicago house.

sounds like a lot of live 909 guys will be taking these on the road now. so if its good enough for them. im in.
