Re: Korg to release ARP Odyssey
The studio I like to record at has a black/gold Odyssey (the engineer bought that in the middle of our last session two years back) and he's had an Octave Cat for quite awhile. I've never had the chance to play any ARP stuff other than the Quartet (and that's a Siel stringer in disguise). I'm back in that studio in a few weeks. Gonna make sure I can get at least a few minutes with that Odyssey to start wetting my whistle for the Kodyssey.

Well, could you ask him to step in and clear up half the things you're saying, then?bochelli wrote:John Foxx does not sunshine.

The "studio" I record at does not have an Odyssey. But I sure hope to see one on my dining-room table, er...studio...in September!redchapterjubilee wrote:The studio I like to record at has a black/gold Odyssey ...

Awesome news, but I hope they make a mini version. I'm quickly running of out space here!

Re: Korg to release ARP Odyssey
When I saw this, I was like, "yeah right", but I dug a little deeper and found this was posted on Korg's own website (OT: hey Korg web designer, not all of us are using tablets/smartphones! Please knock it off with the oversize buttons/images)! This is awesome! Hope it'll have duophonic capabilities like the original and is under $1000...

Re: Korg to release ARP Odyssey
People would be awfully pissed if it wasn't duophonic, considering the original Odyssey was. As for the $1000, I'm crossing my fingers on that - if it is a mini, I bet it's in the $500-700 range, but we'll see...Korg certainly haven't been going for boutique pricing with their new analog stuff, at any rate.ZeeOne wrote:Hope it'll have duophonic capabilities like the original and is under $1000...

Seven months is a long time to speculate about mini keys and pricemeatballfulton wrote:September is still seven months away, folks.

Yup, that's exactly how he does itSteve Jones wrote: isn't that how Billy Currie achieves those impossible glides between octaves in his solos? From looking at videos he flicks the octave switch and the synth glides up the octave as he holds a note? It's such a cool effect, I intend to modify one of my Oddy's to do the same thing.
Anyone have any info or ideas on this?
I've been repairing ARP stuff for a while, and substituting transistors/caps/resistors etc for modern versions make ABSOLUTELY no difference to the sound or performance (the TZ trannies are just general purpose ones, 2N3904/6 are ideal replacements - apart from the pin-out) - I can't see SMD components making a difference, I've built several 2600 VCO modules using SMD and I can't tell the difference - trust me, I'm an ARP DIY freak

Yes, the black/gold Oddy's are often a bit of a Frankenstein mix of boards, particularly the A board. I guess they used up what they had at the factory so some machines had a mixture of type I and type II boards. One thing that I have found is that there is a chip on the Oddy that you must replace with the same brand IC as the original if you put the wrong brand in there you will get VCO and LFO leakage throughout the machine and distortion in the VCO's.Kronik wrote:Yup, that's exactly how he does itSteve Jones wrote: isn't that how Billy Currie achieves those impossible glides between octaves in his solos? Anyone have any info or ideas on this?It should be an easy enough mod to put the transpose before the glide - I'll take a look, although the problem is that that MkII (Black/Gold) can be a bit of a mongrel… The early ones were made up of MkI PCB's, the mid ones had a mix… so without opening it up, you can't really know what you've got inside.

Re: Korg to release ARP Odyssey
Pure speculation but there could be something else lurking just below the surface. Mr Friend may have brought all his ARP designs with him and he and Korg could be prototyping something totally new ... "Something Wonderful", to quote '2010: The Year We Make Contact'.
...As if getting a new MS-20 and ARP Odyssey isn't wonderful enough. Just thinking.

Re: Korg to release ARP Odyssey
Sweet Jesus, the Odyssey has such a killer sound. It's been awhile since I heard one but I've been watching youtube demos of it tonight along with the Pro One and MS20 and I gotta say, the Ody is by far my favorite. It's much more useful for 70's prog rock, which is exactly what I've been after for a while. I gotta get my paws on one of these when they come out!
