cheap analog drum? modular?
Hi everyone ,
the minimal synth genre has driven me to want to own mostly analog gear. i know its totally unpractical for someone with little income to spend but i was wondering what would be a good analog drum machine? ive thought of getting a 606 but was wondering what else is out there. Ive thought of getting some tiptop modules (snare, bass, hats)i like the concept of being able to add on when i have the money to invest. but dont really know where to start because im pretty new to synthesizers in general, let alone modular. please help. i like the sound of the dr-110 but would prefer something i could tweak a little bit.
thanks

Have you looked at the TR8? It's easy to find one and they sound phenomenal.

This will get you a similar sound to the 606 for a lot less money.

Not tweakable but to be honest the tiptop modules aren't very tweakable anyway, and cost a lot more.
Keep in mind also with the tiptop modules you need to sequence them somehow too, which will cost you more money. I had the BD808 and had the intention of getting them all but wasn't totally happy with the lack of tweakability so sold it and bought a vermona drm1 mk 3 which works out cheaper per voice than the tiptops and is a lot more flexible.

Korg Volca beats might do the job. A couple do the sounds are samples but it's tweakable.
Also, the Korg Er-1 isn't analogue but it has lost of knobs and can pull a lot of those old minimal sounds. There are a few preset patterns on my Er-1 mk1 that are like the old minipops sound, and just last week a spent a bit of time dialing in some 'Suicide' kits.

With modular, you'll soon end up in 808/909 territory price-wise. As Stabs said, you'll need to add sequencing, plus a case and power, and a ton of cables. Also you'll soon get sucked into the rabbit hole that is Eurocrack. It is a ton of fun, but cheap it is not.

Cheap and modular are two words that don't belong in the same sentence.
And yet I just did it.

Re: cheap analog drum? modular?
I've also bounced around the idea of building a drum modular, but it's just way over my budget. I've remained perfectly content with sampling my own drum sounds into the Es1. The Er1 is also a good choice, and can do more than analog with it's rudimentary FM engine. You could also look into the Arturia Spark which lets you synthesize each drum sound with it's VST software. Analog drums may seem relatively simple, but lots of the old boxes had purpose built circuits, often utilizing many different modules. Things like ring-mod, and multiple envelopes make up just one sound on an 808. If you're set on "that" sound though, I'd go with Stab's suggestion of a Vermona.

Unless of course you find the never to be found Moog System 55 that's been sitting in someone's closet for 35 years, which their widow/kids/grandkids sell off for 50 bucks because "This piano isn't working right, it only makes one note at a time."Bitexion wrote:Cheap and modular are two words that don't belong in the same sentence.

Uhh.... The Korg Volca Beats is like a 606 on 'roids minus a few features... Namely it only has 1/4 the pattern storage and it does not have song mode.
Otherwise, it sounds very similar, but much more tweakable. Snare needs to have a bit of clap to sound better though. The 606 and Volca beats are on my top 5 favorite drum machines list though, so they're damn good.

Oh yeah, forgot about the Volca beats, that one is a great choice.

it's not analog, but it has modular capabilities, the arturia spark/sparkle 2.0 , the spark was a great drum machine when it came out, but now with it's new 2.0 software, i would say it's even better than the native instruments mashine.

Absolutely love mine. It has replaced almost all the 808 kicks, and 606 Hats I used in tracks.Stab Frenzy wrote:Oh yeah, forgot about the Volca beats, that one is a great choice.

Another one to consider is the MFB-522. Not as cheap as a Volca, but more flexibility & features.

Re: cheap analog drum? modular?
Also Waldorf's Attack softsynth is pretty analog-riffic.
I personally like it for how harsh I can get it to sound. But it does have 'electro' presets and does pretty convincing 808-ish stuff. Plus it is usually available for under $100 as a trio with PPG2.V and Dpole.
There are also some as yet un-blown up drum machines out there.
I settled on a Korg KPR77 for my main 'vintage' rhythmer. It has no provisions for editing the sounds though. Only patterns can be changed. However it does sound pretty good IMHO. And it has trig outs, Din sync and a nice ugly brown case.
Anyone mention the Akai Rhythm Wolf?

I like that mfb !! but a lil bit pricy. Has anyone used the ldb-1e little drummer boy rack module? seems pretty nice !!
