What synth can it be? (That Voice Again - Peter Gabriel)

Post by Lou93 » Wed May 20, 2015 5:22 pm

Hi,

I'm a total noob when it comes to synthesizers, so it would be great if one of you can help me!

I have absolutely no clue what instrument makes the sound of the first chord(s). The separate notes are definitely from a Yamaha CP70, but I don't think a CP70 can make the sound of those chords, or can it??

Could it be a Prophet 5? Or can it be done with a Fairlight?

I hope a Genesis / Peter Gabriel (or someone who's just very awesome) can give me some answers!

Cheers,
Laura

I believe it's actually Daniel Lanois' guitar heavily chorused.

Always loved Manu Katche's drums on that track too... just *slightly* better than the original Fairlight demo, heh... :)

I'm tempted to say processed guitar too. I love this album.

The hour long Classic Album documentary on "So" didn't go into detail on this track, unfortunately, not even the extras - but it's still an excellent watch.

I think it's a guitar part too (by David Rhodes or Daniel Lanois, both are credited with guitar on that track).

Kevin Killen did a Gearslutz QnA some time ago, might be worth having a look there, he certainly answered a few questions about "So".

"In Your Eyes" is my all-time favourite song...

Big PG fan.
My wife and I have seen every tour except the last two.
The first tour in support of his first solo album following his departure from Genesis was not received well.
We had tickets to see him at the Masonic Auditorium( in DetroitI picked out our seating in the balcony in the same area I'd seen The Lamb so my wife could see where I kept talking about).
People filtered in but there weren't too many in the audience, and the ushers eventually came to the balcony and told everyone to go to the main floor and pick out any seat because there were so many empty seats.
The opening act was Television, and it was sad because many of the Prog, diehard Genesis fans booed and heckled them because they weren't playing progressive music. I liked them.

It was weird seeing Peter come out on stage in just a pair of sweat pants and shirt after all the years of seeing him in costume and makeup.
Don't remember much, other than Solisbury Hill and a goosebump giving version of Here Comes the Flood. :)

I couldn't help wondering after the show if Peter might have second thoughts on going solo. To go from filled auditoriums and revered as a prog god, to empty seats on the tour.
I think it kinda worked out for him. ;)

First 10 seconds is definitely CP-70 run through chorus. Guitar kicks in after that.

I wasn't around of course, but from what I've read, they were having trouble selling seats on the Lamb tour, and that was a big let down to the band. Anyways, great story! I've only seen the few videos of his initial solo shows after Genesis. Wearing crossing guard vests and jumping around like assholes. He was embracing punk at the time which was really cool to see. The show was really rough around the edges, but that's how I think PG liked it. This is the one I'm talking about :

Hmm guitar, that's interesting. I thought the attack sounded more like a key instrument rather than a guitar.. but it miiiight be a guitar... Tricky!

I have to make a convincing reproduction of this song for a study project , that's why I want to know exactly what it is so badly!

I've seen some helpful tips that I'll check. Thanks a lot and I'll get back to you when I found the answer or when I need some more input!

Wow, never saw that video before. I remember the show being a bit more subdued than that. lol
Watching the video it looks like it's been sped up. The movement of the players looks unnaturally fast to me, and the vocals also sound sped up.
Interesting though, thanks jabberwalky. :)

I agree with Z, it sounds like a CP-70. The attack sounds more like a keyboard than guitar to me, but Gabriel is a master at getting strange sounds, so???

Lou, did you see my updated edit? I pasted all the information because the link didn't appear to be working.

From what I hear, the first chord is chorused guitar followed by piano (CP70) playing octaves, repeating in the first few measures before the drums, bass, and bright Fender Strat come in. The intro is an interaction between guitar and piano.

Thanks a lot for your feedback! It helped a lot! But now I can't seem to find out which part is the Prophet 5??
