Synths/Samplers with LCD upgrades

Post by vinyl_junkie » Fri Oct 16, 2015 9:32 pm

So lots of people replacing crappy LCD screens on synths and samplers with nicer OLED displays now.
This is especially great if the old display has one of those awful EL foils with their screaming inverters and shitty faint light.

Akai S-950, MPC-60, Korg Wavestation being just some from the top of my head...

So lets see, who's modified their gear with new displays and what did you use?

I replaced the screen in my Alpha Juno with a new LCD which is LED backlit. This had two advantages, one is the contrast was MUCH better and second the light ohhh the light.
The original display in it is a Sharp LM16155 16x1 display with a HD44780 controller chip and has a 14 pin connector.
Found something from China for about £3 inc the postage, fitting it was a bit of a b***h but at the end of the day it all went in there.

There are also some nice OLED displays for Waldorf gear...

I think these are the screens for the Waldorf Micro Q's, apparently they fit right in.

OLED displays for my Prophet VS & Prophet VS rack. Beautiful. I'll try and post a picture later.

Nice!
I recently played a DIS Pro 2 and other than the fact that it's a absolutely lovely instrument the screen really is superb! I'm glad more manufacturers are using these kinds of screens.

Now if only there was a modern solution for the old Akai 16 bit S series samples with some kind of OLED

Ya there's a lot of Akai gear with the same display. I'd like to replace the one in my MX-1000 keyboard. It's the same as the S-1000 display.

I'll bet that S950 looks pimp tite in real life, LCD photos never seem to represent. My S900 needs a new EL inverter.
EDIT: I just discovered I can replace the whole display with one having an LED backlight requiring NO inverter. Heck yeah!

My most recent was a striking Orange on Black OLED in my beloved uWave I:

Some of my previous retrofits:

And my S900 which is permanently hooked up to the VX90 as a complex oscillator source these days:

I did the same thing with my Casio CZ-101. Again just a standard 16x2 HD44780 cost about £3 delivered. I fitted it a while ago now and I think the only complications were reversing the pin lay out and introducing a couple of jumpers for the power. Some people fashioned a brand new mounting bracket however I found that simply twisting wire through the screw holes in the display and existing bracket has worked perfectly.

I've got an S900 myself and am tempted by the upgraded screen modules but while they cost about 10 times more than the 101 upgrade it is more difficult to justify. They do look great in the pictures though.
