Moog Liberation. To restore or to mod ?

Post by Yekuku » Mon Oct 24, 2016 11:17 pm

In a moment of craziness , I got myself a moog liberation, literally in pieces , missing the ribbon assembly , the bottom plate, the after touch circuit, the 6pin cable and near all screws. Unfortunately most key contacts are bent and there are several visible issues on the pcbs, but thankfully nothing is cracked.
I put everything back together, just to take a picture :

Please help me decide what to do with this instrument.

First of all, I can not part it out. I may end up paying double its price for the repair, but I would not break it in parts and sell it
Anyways,
The whole wooden body needs rework, I am thinking of removing the paint and leaving the natural wood finish.
Chances for finding a ribbon assembly are slim, even if i could track down one , it would be expensive.
I can not replicate the original ribbon assembly but I am pretty confident that I can build a custom one using normal pots (not mini wheels) and a pressure sensitive strip.
The problem is that I really hate keytars. I hate the way it looks.
I want to cut it in rectangular shape and make it a proper desktop Keyboard.
Is it unethical ?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Even better IMHO make it a desktop module. Saves you fixing the keyboard.

Thanks for your input madtheory, to be honest this is what I thought in the first place, but the keys are fixable , so I dont mind taking all the time it needs to repair them.
Fun fact about the keyboard assembly : I had no idea that MOOG used a KORG keyboard in the liberation. Does anybody have any insights of what was going on at the time ? I think that the liberation was produced after Dr.Μoogs departure from the company.

Interesting. So you're missing the bit that the 6 pin cable connects to... the PSU and CV gate interface. So have you been able to power the thing up at all?

Sorry for the misunderstanding , actually I got the PSU / CV interface and it is the only piece from the unit that is intact , it is just missing from the picture I took.
Damn it , I was looking for information about the ribbon and I remember that there was a picture showing the guts of the ribbon assembly in the Synth Guts thread, but it looks that the thread is long gone.
