Using a Loop Station with a synth

Post by impaler42 » Mon Feb 04, 2008 9:07 pm

I just got a Boss GR-2 loop station and Ive been using it with my Juno 106 with great results. Anyone else use a loop station with their synths? Just wondering because most everyone I know who uses a loop station either plays guitar or bass.

My friend uses Boss RC20XL to loop his Rhodes Piano (I don't know, if that counts as a synth, but anyway...). You can check his music: http://www.myspace.com/soquietsoquiet

I also tried to loop my synths in Boss RC 50, but it's still in phase of experimients now. But results are promissing.

I loop synths with my Akai Headrush all the time. I also love to bang out some individual drum sounds to create sequences.

Yeah Ive had some time messing around with this setup and its been great. Its very easy to play great licks on the fly and its easy to come up with on the spot ideas for progressions.

My setup is a Virus Indigo and a DI guitar setup (guitar into Adrenalinn into Yamaha Magicstomp) each into one channel of a Boss DD-20 digital delay. The stereo signal from the DD-20 goes to a PA.

The nice thing about the DD-20 is that you can set long delay times with long decays for Fripp/Eno type evolving loops or you can set it up to do a single loop like the RC pedals.

A cheap looper is the EHX #1 echo.
up to 2 seconds of rather clean sounding digital delay.

if you use the 2nd output of a guitar tuner as a "bypass switch" type device or a bypass loop pedal its fine.

Personally I'm pretty lousy at timing with loopers in general.

My Malekko Delay can do the loop thing too but quickly degenerates into self oscillating analogue dirt and I love it for that!

I really want to do this with a couple of synths as an improv thing. Right now I can't really do stuff on the fly. Once I get my income tax return I will probably get a loop pedal of some sort.

I've been using an Ibanez dd700 with a hold feature. It works great for setting up beats. I'll some sounds, hold down the sustain pedal and bam! NIce that it bypasses the effect when holding a loop. Hold feature on a dealy is super useful.
so what do I put down here now?

I loop alot w/ my synths- I have the rc20xl and use both the inputs(2 synths or guitar /synth, a bit fiddly but works) and sometimes will build whole songs w/ it when I play live. Not so useful for recording as it gets pretty noisey. I also use it alot when I am writing to keep ideas when I'm not hooked up to the lappy- I have often considered of getting 3 and doing a live looping thing- been done for sure but damn I think it'd be fun.

I started doing a bit of this with my mini kaoss pad. the KP has it's ups and downs. The coolest part about it is that usually one of the axis controls what portion of your loop you want to be looping (ie, you record in a bar, then using your finger you make it only loop the first 1/4 note, or a little 1/32nd bleep).. I wish I could control WHICH portion of the bar it loops for each length though - as it is now if you want to loop a 1/4 note it's always the same 1/4 note (ie, I think it's always beat 2 for the quarter note).

The other up is that you can add in some effect like distortion or whatever into the loop and control it live. It's a pretty slick way to control an entire mix! I just want a second one so I can bounce loops back and forth.
