Best studio flooring?

Post by Check » Tue Jul 10, 2007 8:50 am

Hey guys, I have this (relatively) huge basement that has not been used for years and I just got started cleaning it up for conversion as a studio...I was wondering what the best flooring for a studio would be? I've seen some wood and some carpet, what's your opinion?

Thanks

Definitely wood if you intend to do any serious recording (especially acoustic instruments), easy to keep clean too :).

if you go for a decent wood flooring but have a nice thick rug too, a wooden floor can be great when recording acoustic guitar and stuf but can cause alot of reflections, the kind of think you try to minimize in most control rooms

with a big rug you can have the best of both worlds
Alesis Ion, Korg Poly800II, Akai S1000, CommodoreC64, Nintendo Gameboy and various software Synths.

Okay, wood it is, but here's my situation.. In my studio, I have another room which is about 8x9 in dimensions, then, across from that I have a small "closet" about 3.5'x6'.

Image
I can't really explain it so I drew it out- bare with my jacked up proportions ...

I think I want to put the drums in the 8x9 room and a vocal booth in the 3x6 room but I'm not sure yet- but I also could use the 8x9 as a vocal booth and since there is no door on the 3x6 is currently total open I could use that as just more space, then the drums would go in somewhere in the empty space (feel free to suggest a different set-up :))

So back to my my question... Do you think the WHOLE room should be wood, or, carpet in the vocal booth, etc.

Thanks

Do the whole room with a wood floor, and have carpet tiles (or as mentioned rugs) so you can change as necessary. If you're planning on letting other people use it ( for money,of course) their preferences may be different.
Currently plugged in to the mixer :
Korg EA1,Korg MS10 and some shortwave radios.

Don't you dare put wood flooring in your basement!!! Naughty naughty naughty. You'll be replacing it in 3 to 10 years if you do. Same with Carpeting - not a smart thing to do.

However I do agree with Spike regarding carpet tiles && || rugs - but no carpeting (mold) and no wood floors (warping / rot).

If you don't plan on finishing your basement, then you may find it beneficial, and cheaper, to simply hang some comforters on your walls. You could get some plain white quilted ones - for cheap, and they would suppress reflections pretty well, plus it wouldn't even look >too< bad :)
