my latest swap meet find: EHX Small Stone!

Post by killedaway » Sun Jul 22, 2007 3:37 am

got this ugly little thing for 5 bucks (talked down from 10). i wasn't even sure it was gonna work; something was rattling around inside, but i figured it was the battery. it's a little worse for the wear (missing a screw and one of the rubber feet), but i felt it was worth taking a chance on...

i opened it up and discovered an Energizer 9-volt, circa 1980 or something (!) which had managed to not break open and corrode! it was indeed loose and rattling around. the insides are overall very clean. i replaced the battery, plugged it in to my little amp, plugged in my guitar and expected the worst. lo and behold -- it works and sounds really nice. it's currently hooked up to my microKORG, and i'm messing around with some arpeggiated stuff to see how it sounds.

i'm not an effects snob by any stretch of the imagination (i LOVE my Virtualizer Pro!), so i'm having a hard time discerning between the Small Stone and the inbuilt Phaser in my mK. however, one area where i hear a difference is in the low-end. the Small Stone seems a bit thinner to my ears -- like the bass frequencies aren't coming thru as much. i guess 'cause it's a guitar effect? i have no idea, really. it also sounds a lot... i don't want to say smoother, but i guess that's it. it sounds "wetter" if any of you can get your head around that description.

it's quite noisy -- the switches i mean, not the effect itself. i guess a lifetime of sitting in a junk heap will do that. anybody know the name of that stuff you spray on noisy pots/switches to de-whatever them?

anyhow, that's all. here's a pic, too, for anyone that cares to see it. hey, i even snapped a pic of the old battery, 'cause you like it.

Congrats!

The EHX Small Stone may be a one-trick pony, but damn, what a trick!

I sure love mine. :D

thanks, Ian! i like the look of that one, too (or should i say more, since it's nice and clean!). man, i can't get enough of this thing. i've been playing with it for hours, using it on some of my more somber patterns/songs and just feeding the whole mix into it. i can see why these guys are so popular. i like my rack effects, but there's something more "fun" about stomp boxes.

yea, it is a play-for-ages effect, as it does not tire the ear.

good for psych rock wah solos, great on an analog stringer! :D

and yea, I agree on stomp boxes being more fun. sometimes they get the sound, sometimes rack units do, but I think the best is to use a mix of both.

cheers,
Ian

thats a great find.....

I was reading an article today about THE SMALL STONE vs THE PHASE 90 today while I was on the pot....
"All we used was the explosion and the orchestra hit. The Fairlight was a $100,000 waste of space."

100! 100! 100!

(though admittedly i like all three...just like the phase100 best)

but at $5, that's a helluva nice score, killed...glad you're enjoying it!

you know, i'll agree with this. it's subtle compared to a lot of other phasers i've heard, including the one in the mK. but when it comes to phasers, i like to take it super-easy, as i find if the effect is really piled on, i get tired of it fast. a nice, crawling sweep sounds best to my ears, and this one does that pretty well. but certainly, if you wanted a phaser with a lot of oomph or presence, this probably wouldn't be it.

ian - i was wondering how you implement all those pedals. do you just hook them up and power as needed, or do you actually run a whole chain? (i wouldnt think so, but you never know)
Brains can be used like a "stress ball," but only once.

Is the Electro-Harmonix Small Stone Nano any good? They’re only a couple of bucks cheaper than the full size model though. And on the subject of EH, is the Nano line of pedals decent?

What I've been told is that they are identical. It's just smaller housing than the older models because people complained over those big boxes. Especially BIG Muff...
