Studio

Post by immigrantboy » Wed Aug 22, 2007 4:08 am

I suppose this belongs in sound production, but I may go off into some irrelevent tangent, so deal.

The band I'm in has a studio. Its a $220 a month deal on the bad side of town. I'd use it for my solo project, but its definetely not a smoke free studio. I'd go work on my solo project with the band around, but I know we'd end up playing the band set, and I insist on only bringing my c**p keyboards there.

So I'm thinking of looking for my own place to play. But, I live in an apartment, so I can't use an amp or do vocals. And I don't want to pay for another studio (though it should be mentioned that I'm pretty much paying for my share of the band's studio in beverages). So what should I do?

I'm either thinking of looking for some obscure abandoned warehouse around (it might happen). Or I'm considering sound-proofing a helmet to do vocals into. Huge sound-proof material padded helmet. That would be far out! Though I'm not sure if that would work. Here's that tangent I was telling you guys about, yeah...

Any suggestions?

So why can't you record vocals in your apartment? Are you worried about disturbing the neighbors or about the sound of your apartment? You should just try it, once all the rest of the music is in place and mixed I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the results...

There are other products out there like SE's reflexion filter:

which may help. Or you could put a thick doona/duvet over your head but I find that it is uncomfortable, hot, and not conducive to productivity or inspiration.

I seriously wouldn't bother though. Just find a room that doesn't have too much flutter echo (clap your hands, you'll hear it go ZING!) Get a nice mic and preamp and you're good to go.

Good luck!

I record vocals at home in a makeshift vocal booth which is basically a couple of queen size doonas draped over a frame. Has been good enough for released stuff, and the room the booth is in sounds pretty nasty. If I can do it so can anyone.

just record the vocals in your closet.
Brains can be used like a "stress ball," but only once.

have you considered moving? maybe ditch the studio and look for a loft or rent a house with your band mates that has enough space for all of your musical needs.

lol big rubber ball...

Actually I have a closet that would be near perfect, and a few mattresses lining all surfaces would totally sound proof it. Awesome advice!

Unfortunately I can't move. I just moved into this place, am on a one year lease, and other than this issue, I rather like it.

on mtv cribs with lil jon he revealed his vocal booth. if i remember correctly it was a part of his basement possibly under the stairs sealed off by a mattress! outkast (read big boi) recorded using his shower enclosure. it both cases they were probably recorded to pro-tools and later fine tuned and remastered somewhere of higher quality. 8)
I am infected with noises in my brain, the sound of pain and it is constant. Soon I will release music so horrible that hopefully you too will be infected. Slayer, wolf eyes, johnny cash, justin timberlake f**king rock!

WOT!? OKAY!!

That's cool. Even some of the superstars have makeshift setups.

I seen a nice booth made from an old busted commercial refrigerator, the guy lived next to a train line and needed a heavy duty solution.
