What stompbox chorus sounds like the Alpha Juno chorus?

Post by I Am the Walrus » Wed Nov 21, 2007 10:14 pm

I love the built-in chorus on the Alpha Juno. Is there a chorus the form of a stompbox that can do the same kind of slow out-of-phasey chorus? Is one of the Boss chorus pedals the same?

I've never heard of the sound production chorus. Where do you get one?

He means the forum. Should've moved it directly, tallow! ;)

Anyway, the Juno chorus can be done with a Boss CE-300 or so I've heard. You can adjust depth & rate like on the Alpha.

The CE-300 is indeed very juno-like (but less noisy), but it's not a stompbox at all. I have it.
It is a rack mount unit with lots of knobs. I think he wants a guitar stompbox. A stompbox usually just has one or two knobs and a big button you step on to engage or disengage the chorus.

There are dozens of them..check out electro-harmonix website.

EHX is great, tho it has a distinct sound which is quite different from Rolandese/Boss designs ..

so id also check some of the old BOSS range of pedals, many types of chorus they've issued over the yrs, from standard to more ensemble-y. imo they sound much better than onboard ajuno chorus; for ex. CE-2 or CE-5 etc..

in truth i dont really like the chorus on any of the junos. too electronic. i like the MKS70/JX10/JX8P one so much better.

i also used DM-300 mod delay for chorusing. very musical, warm. if a bit noisy. wish it was rackmountable.

I second the RCE-10. It's not a stomp box, but it is stereo in & out. I picked up one a year or so ago to to use with an Alpha Juno 2, whose stereo chorus I was killing by running it through a mono overdrive pedal. Now I turn the AJ2's chorus off and put the RCE-10 last in line, to get stereo chorus back. If you A/B them, it's not *exactly* the flavor of the AJ2's chorus, but close enough. Just as good, I'd say, but slightly different.

My DOD performer 565 pedal sounds pretty close to the Juno- its a helluva a lot quieter as well.

I'd check out the analogman Chorus or the Red Witch Empress for two excellent takes on a thick, warm chorus sound in pedal form. Neither have the Juno sound exactly, but they have so much more too.

The Diamond Halo is more pristine, but still with some excellent stereo swirl due to chorus + phasing.

The Boss DC-2 Dimension C is shimmering and spatial with a totally different sound than the usual chorus pitch-warble. Ethereal yet subtle.

cheers,
Ian
