Cascading mixers?

I'm running out of channels on my 12-channel mixer, what with rehearsing with a band [voice, guitar, bass, organ, four stereo synths]. I was wondering if anyone has cascaded one mixer into another -- say, add a ten-channel mixer to a stereo channel to get 20 channels?

I imagine there would be some noise -- not fatal, since this would be for rehearsing and not recording or playing live -- but is it inadvisable? What's the best way to do this?

Best way to do it is to go in through line level FX returns usually, you don't need the pan, EQ, aux sends anyway so keep em out of the signal path.

Thanks! That's all I needed to know. I could get a 6 channel mixer and expand to 18 overall by putting it through the FX returns. Much thanks.
