Lexicon MX200 <VS> Alesis Wedge

Post by xenomorph313 » Wed May 21, 2008 4:01 am

Finally decided to add some reverb to my vector synths. Which is better for that reverb that will turn vector sounds into an audio soup that is sleepable to?

Obviously some of it is in the envelope shape of the sound, how it opens up and all (Slow ramp up -> Slow ramp down; Attack = Release),
but, really, what would you prefer,

MX200 or Wedge?
Thanks for your thoughts!

I'm not a big fan of the cheaper Lexicons personally, I like the cheaper TCs better. Have heard many good things about the Wedge but haven't used one so can't personally say. Also I'm not sure if that's 'good' or 'good for the price'.

According to Dave Bryce who worked on the Andromeda, it's internal fx processer is the same as a Wedge. Many seek out some Andy demos that use the internal fx and see how you like them?

If good for the price means that your only adding
a "pinch" of reverb to your sounds to give them
a tail at the end, then that wouldn't be good for
the price, in my opinion.

I'm looking for the reverb that will make the
audio signal sound like your literally floating on
air in the clouds...if you know what I mean?

If you've ever listened to Drone Zone or Cryosleep
on internet radio, those are the sounds I'm after.

can the Wedge handle that?
Thanks

Find an old midiverb II, bloom preset.
The wedge was meant to be a inexpensive buss reverb, it's probably not the best choice. I'm not familar with the lex. If you want to try before you buy, I know it's not the same, but I could do an impulse response of my MVII if you want.
I had an old yamaha MEP that had some crazy verbs and chorus+verbs that was trippy, no idea what they're like on the used market now though.

Didnt mean to be misleading with that last post (poor choice of words).

All I meant by that statement was that I'm looking for reverb that makes the TG33, etc. sound big and spacious.

Some of the reverbs I've been hearing on the Andromeda Youtube video demos sound like more of a Hall or Room Preset, not a HUGE spacious atmospheric preset, if that makes more sense.

Think Biosphere or Robert Rich, Shuttle 358, Steve Roach....the reverbs you might find in their music

Hope that clears some things up

@DesDinova:

Any reason out of all the Midiverbs out there you choose the II?
Do the Midiverb 3's and 4's not have the bloom preset?
Thanks

They don't, and the MV4 that I've played with didn't do anything for me. They're programmable though, the II isn't.

I've got a Wedge that I paid about $35.00 for and it works great w/ synths like the TG-33. Very easy to program using the sliders. Below is an mp3 of the Wedge and a K2000...plus I think there is a Whammy effect from a DigiTech RP50 at the end of the effects chain.

Wow, astro is that yours? I think that reverb fills out the space well enough, although it sounded rather "mute" in the mix. Is there a way to make the reverb more pronounced and echo longer? Remember, I'm a discriminating listener of Ambient style (I listen to it every night before bed).

Otherwise, I thought it sounded fine. Very Aphex Twin SAW II-ish

Any other Wedge Demos?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, it was a pretty simple signal chain...

K2000VX > Wedge > DigiTech RP50 > Delta44 > Chainer > .wav

If I was halfway serious about things, I would have added some EQ or taken the RP50 out of the signal chain since it came out pretty flat. But yeah, you totally can make the reverb "more pronounced" and I guess you could make the "echo longer" w/ a few slider moves on the Wedge. If it was me, I would just add my MidiVerb III after the Wedge for more Ambient goodness.

K2000VX > Wedge > DigiTech RP50 > Delta44 > Chainer > .wav
Actually, I've never used outboard effects before, I've always just used the built-in FX on the synths. I might need a diagram like the above one
for me to figure out what my chain would look like.

At minimum, I know I would start with this:

ESQ-1 > Wedge > M-12E Mixer > .wav

But I have no idea what your RP50, Delta44, and chainer are.
Let me know, if possible
Thanks!

K2000VX (synth) > Wedge (digital effects) > DigiTech RP50 (digital effects) > Delta44 (audio interface) > Chainer (Windows PC app) > .wav

RP50

Delta 44

Chainer

I used Chainer to record the audio and render the .wav file. Chainer can also hosts VST plugins if you want additional, computer based, effects. It's a great little program that's easy to use (if limited).
