field recording
hi...I need a great sounding field recorder and it has to small in size, like a walkman.
it would be great if it has extra mic connection as well as the build-in and runs on AA battery.
although any recommendation in field recording will be very helpful.
thanks for help!

Re: field recording
I just bought a Zoom H2 for $258 CDN taxes and extended warrantee in. It can record 4 tracks at once since it has four built in mics.amatsov wrote:hi...I need a great sounding field recorder and it has to small in size, like a walkman.

Re: field recording
I have recorded some LPs on it but no in the field recordings. It sounds exactly as it was. No discernable difference.amatsov wrote:can you post some recodings you have done with it and tell more about how you like it?

Some of these review sites do have posted comparison recordings. I had found a link but lost it - perhaps later this evening I'll have another look if you haven't found it yet and if I find it again, I'll post a link..

Looks like it it will give you a close SHAVE as well!
Seriously, though, we picked up a ZOOM H2 for our studio here, and we use it to collect street percussion sounds -- metal light poles, so forth.
The surround sound clarity and quality has been amazing, and you can import the recordings right into your DAW.

I've been researching this topic a lot lately.
This model is not the cheapest, but I think it is the best for the money:
http://mixonline.com/ms/aes2007/video/sony_pcm_d50/
The Sony PCM D50.
Good mics, SPDIF in, built in 4GB drive, good display, well built, and it uses normal batteries.
I plan on buying one in the near future.
I had the M- Audio Microtrack II which I liked a lot, I used it with an Apogee Minime and it was really great. I got that one because I needed the SPDIF in from the Apogee. I didn't really use the microphones that came with it.
I did not go for the Zooms because they did not have SPDIF or digital in at all. But they look to be really good for the money as well.

man... I wish I'd caught this thread a couple days ago...
I'm about to shell out for a roland sp-404, sort of for the same purpose of capturing "field" percussion to ultimately use in studio... I guess the principle is the same as all of these (as is the price roughly), but with the benefit of being able to trigger things immediately... I guess the main difference is the 404 will be more "fun", but a little bulkier.
hmmm
