Manley ELOP - Drummachines/Synths

Post by kuroichi » Tue Jun 10, 2008 11:28 am

Ive been interested in a compressor for a while to use with my equipment, I was thinking about something like an ELOP, or a simple LA 2A style piece.

Im wondering if anyone has any experience using the ELOP or a similar thing, with drum machines.

Or am I better going for something with EQ.

Any particular reason you're looking at electro-optical comps? I would've thought they'd be a bit too sluggish for drum machine stuff. The Manley ELOP has a 2.5 sec decay at 6db reduction, for instance.

Maybe something faster would be more appropriate, something in the 1176 vein maybe?

I originally thought that myself. Particularly when used on drums, and thought I might be better off with a vari mu or a 1176.

I wanted to get a simple compressor for my sub mixes, individual tracks etc, and thought the ELOP was a good price. It will see all round usage in different areas, but a lot of the stuff I do personally is based around the percussion. I doubt it will see heavy usage, and at certain points will be used for experimenting.

I was just wondering if anyone had any first hand experience with one.

KMFDM run most all their drums through Manley compressors, if that helps.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to look into that.

i read it in the electroshock book. some cool interviews in there, but reading the interview with bjork is like beating your head against a wall...underwater.
