what should i get, i'm thinking about spending around the 500 us range ... what kind of speakers do you use and are they good, how much? etc.

it should also be noted that i'm not a professional and will probably be indie my whole life. i still want good sound though.

what about the yamaha hs80m? is that enough to spend, they did create the industry standard for awhile there with the older model .

I'm using HS50s, and they are quite brutal in the sense that they won't flatter your sound at all. I've heard higher-end stuff which has more detail, but is less confrontational.
I'd say the HS50s paid for themselves within a week of purchase - I was doing some master eq stuff on some finished tracks, the sort of +-1dB kind of eqing, and the before/after HS50s mixes are night and day when it comes to clarity on every system I've listened to them on.

If the sound is comparable though, between the HS50/80s and the NS10s, I've yet to hear a home stereo remotely near this harsh. Like I say - there are certainly clearer, more detailed speakers out there, but these ones really won't flatter you at all.
