yes jambo.. i'm there... i'm so busy these days...

i'm realy glab that compagnies can make good quality mic for these prices. i mean, only 5 years ago i coulldn't even dream to get a tube telefunken mic. but now you can get it's aquivalent from apex for alot less.

same thing for these red5 mics. you did have a great service from them when you called. very good price. and they sound quite good for what we can hear of your demo, the high seemed cluthered with the mxl compared to the red5.

how do you like working with a multipatern? for me it's been day and night since i use one.

On the topic of drum mics, I've found the Audix mics are fantastic. Sound great for recording, although I do still have a soft spot for MD421s on toms. But the Audixes are cheap and well built enough to use live, and they sound a whole lot better than anything else people use live. When I mix live I always use the D6 and i5 for kick and snare and get a lot of complements on the drum sound.

now that you've had it for some time, how does the RV10 stack up against the V63M on vocals, exclusively? (if you've gotten much use from it, that is.)

my voice is mid-high, and i find the V63M to be pretty accurate, but on my brother-in-law's voice (very much a baritone), i feel like something isn't getting thru, like he sounds a little "muddy".

I'm no expert on microphones as I've said before but I'm certain that the V63M has a totally hyped hi-end. I'd imagine in some applications this can work in your favour - i.e. for subdued voices or to bring a vocal track forward - but it's a double-edged sword since it's bound to introduce sibilance too so that may be why your brother doesn't fare as well.

In fact I'd go as far to say it can sound "muddy" at times - it certainly scoops some mids to my ears. For example I stuck in front of a guitar cab and the result comprised of lots of bass, treble hiss and not a lot of definition. Maybe the upper mids are subdued? Who knows.

he RV10 has quite a natural, more neutral sound, although it's likely the treble frequencies are still emphasised a little as they are in most LDCs. It's no Neumann I'm sure but I don't think you could compare it to an el cheapo Chinese LDC. h**l, for the price you're getting a great sounding microphone with selectable pick up patterns so you can't really complain either way. It's definitely more "transparent" than the V63M though - of that I' certain.

thanks very much. yeah, my bro-in-law is looking to build his own studio, and since he actually has a singing voice, it'd be nice for him to start things off on the right foot, with a decent mic. i'll add the RV10 to the "short list" of mics to investigate with him. i think he'd do well on the AKG C3000 as well, which i believe is in a similar price range.

Actually if he's on a tight budget and only likely to be using it for vocals he'd probably be better off with the RV8. It's a fair bit cheaper and basically the same as the RV10 (identical capsule I was told on the phone). The main (or maybe only?) difference being that it only offers a cardioid pick-up pattern, but since this is the most widely used to record vocals it should do him just fine.

Killedaway, are you talking the original C3000, not the later C3000B? I've used a C3000B on my bandmate's vocal quite a lot and it really suits his voice which is very dark and needs to be brightened up and have the low mid definition improved. I've heard the original C3000 sounds quite different though. I have an Oktavamod MK-319 which was really quite cheap and it sounds fantastic on brighter voices, as it's quite a dark mic. Sounds fantastic on certain voices, but the whole thing with mics is matching the mic with the source. I'd try out a few different mics on your brother in law before settling one one to buy.

Great mic for the price IMO, even though a lot of people seem to look down on it. I assisted on a jazz session a while ago and we had access to a lot of vintage AKGs and Neumanns, recording through a Harrison desk to tape and the C3000B was the mic of choice for the guitar cab, and yet I've still heard people say it's one of the worst mics ever made.

i've heard it on a handful of vocals (not my own, though), and it seems to really work well on bass-y voices, keeping things clear and tight, without a lot of boom and mud.
