Daisy-chaining firewire interfaces?

Post by downgrade » Mon Dec 08, 2008 12:14 am

Just wondering if all or most firewire interfaces are chain-able. Providing that both interfaces are from the same manufacturer and use the same/similar drivers.

I'm running out of inputs on an Alesis IO14 and was thinking about picking up a 2nd hand IO26.

Also... I did some looking around elsewhere about building an "aggregate device"? I guess this uses the devices' CoreAudio drivers and by selecting that aggregate device, both devices become available?

Yep. At my old work I set up two Motu 896s and a Traveler together as an aggregate device to do a 56 channel soundscape concert and it worked fine. Other people in the studio had some problems getting it to work, but I had no problems. Setting up a proper clocking situation was important, this is easier with interfaces with wordclock BNC connectors.

Personally I'd be looking at getting one interface with all the ins and outs you need in one before using an aggregate device, the latency performance isn't quite as good. Also aggregate devices are only available in 10.4 and up, so if you're still on 10.3 you can't use them.

Thanks

Good to know about the latency issue. I think I might try and find a firewire mixer and one of these for clocking
