PCI interface that actually works in Vista??

Post by shaft9000 » Wed Feb 18, 2009 1:52 am

I'm on the verge of chucking Vista, and installing XP in this machine (Lenovo 3000H) .
No firewire onboard :( ...and I prefer to avoid USB.

Before i do, i'm wondering who's had any luck w/ a PCI interface in Vista.
I just need 2 line in's and out's preferably w/ s/pdif for running softies and internet.
RME & Apogee don't offer anything that's PCI.
I hear Edirol has solid Vista drivers, but their all seemingly Firewire.

Perhaps I should bite the bloody bullet and get a PCI->Firewire I/O card?
Or do the "downgrade" to XP and use my Layla20 (no Vista drivers available) instead.

I am hesitant to chuck Vista since it's been out for a while, and one would ASSUME that wider support is around the corner. Knowing Microsoft, they could have very well f**k up the developer's ability to write reliable drivers. Or perhaps Edirol just knows something most of the other guys don't yet.
Puzzling.

Do it.

Remember that Windows 7 is in development (beta was available for download some time ago), so Microsoft probably have stopped giving a s**t about Vista...

Terratec does PCI stuff which works well with Vista (I by myself use the Phase22+Vista combination and had very few problems; system crashed only 2 times in its life, both because of some soundcard error) but...it's Terratec. I don't really know how do you consider it after comparison with RME and Apogee.
It would probably be a stupid thing to downgrade your os if your pc is not a "production-only" one.

...and, no. It's not Microsoft's fault if the manufacturers of your equipment want you to buy their new gear and do not care about writing proper vista drivers for their older stuff :)
