Writing and Sequencing Drum tracks IN THE BOX

Post by BadTeeth » Fri May 08, 2009 10:15 am

I'd love to have 10,000 to spend on a bunch of Roland drum machines but failing a lucky lottery ticket thats not a valid thought.

I have a harddrive full of high-quality samples and some really good software (like BFD). But I am curious as to how everyone here sequences their drums in a DAW. Whats your favourite method? Which control surface, plugin, or sequencer is the catalyst for your free-flowing creative compositions?

:D ?

i use nepheton/drumazon,

I made a custom max patch that lets me use my BCR2000 as a TR style sequencer, and all the knobs are mapped to the other controls of the drum machine.

If I'm using samples,

I just copy/paste them on an audio track... I like the manual editing process.

I use Pro Tools, Kontakt and a weighted keyboard (Akai MX-1000). I just play them, and quantize later. Sometimes fully, sometimes a percentage. I've tried drum machines, and I'm not comfortable with being stuck in a pattern. Although I do end up with patterns, of course. I've tried drum pad controllers, but my keyboard technique is a lot better.

So like you, I have a big collection of samples. I'm also fond of the Waldorf Attack plugin. Sometimes I sample that into Kontakt.

I use Kontakt to play Recycle files, usually a mixture of playing the individual hits on the keyboard and triggering the loop. That's fun.

Apart from cutting up loops in Recycle (which is great), I really don't like manual editing, I prefer to play it until I get it right, I find that more intuitive, personally.
