Best Microphone Cables? Mogami?
So, I'm torn between getting two different microphone cables. All from the same brand, Mogami.

Problem is, the first option is really expensive, and I need a 20-foot cable. The second option is 25-foot, but is cheaper, and is supposedly not as good as the Gold series? If anyone has experience with these Mogami cables, please let me know if I should really shell out the extra 40 or so for the Gold cables, or just stick with the Silver series cables.
And if you have any other suggestions as far as other cables, please let me know. I'm looking for a nice sounding cable! I've just heard a lot about the Mogami ones. Thanks!

If you're not running excessive lengths (ie over 100') you probably won't notice a sonic difference. You will notice a construction quality difference, though for sure between Mogami and cheap cables.
If you have any skills whatsoever with a soldering iron it is exceedingly easy to "roll your own" and much cheaper. You can buy Mogami mic cable for under $0.40 a foot.

Mogami cables are where it's at. I roll with a roll of bulk cable and a box of Switchcraft ends. And real solder, with lead in it! You can buy supplies to build custom cabling for all your instruments for the cost of one or two pre-soldered mic cables. Bing, bing - we have a winner!

Markertek.com
Switchcraft connectors are the industry standard but I like Neutrik for ease of use. Never had an issue with them.

That cable would work great. Looks like the price has gone up since I last ordered. Used to be $0.41 a foot I think.
Canare is also good stuff and was cheaper than Mogami but looks like the prices are similar now. Must be due to the high cost of copper; everything is going up.
Again, unless you're running hundreds of feet, any decent quality cable will be fine. It will always be cheaper to make your own. I do like Mogami because the shield is easier to work with.

Same but Canare and Neutrik.Cruel Hoax wrote:Mogami cables are where it's at. I roll with a roll of bulk cable and a box of Switchcraft ends. And real solder, with lead in it! OP: It's worth mentioning that the cable makes an almost unnoticeable difference to the sound, compared to room, mic and preamp. Unless you've got the first three sorted you're not going to have to worry about the cable.
Re: Best Microphone Cables? Mogami?
To Stab Frenzy: I have the room, mic, and preamp pretty much set out. I mean, right now, I'm running a really basic setup. A Rode NT1-A going into a M-Audio DMP3, and then into an Alesis Multimix 8 USB as my audio interface. My room is fairly decent for mic recording, but I'm going all "DIYYY MANNNNZ;LKJA;SLDKJF" and setting up a "booth" in my closet haha. I just ordered an Apogee Duet though recently, and plan on using that with Logic.
PS. Should I keep the M-Audio DMP3, or sell it and use the preamps in the Apogee Duet? I've fairly liked the DMP3, but if I don't need it I could use it to buy a Devi Ever pedal I'm craving. hahahaha.

Re: Best Microphone Cables? Mogami?
I'd wait til you get the Duet and then compare the two, but I suspect that the Duet is going to have better pres.
Re: Best Microphone Cables? Mogami?
Thanks SF.
So I did some more research, and found some companies that make "custom hand-made cables" by buying Mogami and Canare cables and soldering on different ends to them. For instance:

Anyone familiar with these guys? I would go the custom route, but I don't know how to solder :[

Re: Best Microphone Cables? Mogami?
I've heard good reports about Redco, another company like that.
Soldering isn't that hard, if you buy the stuff to make your own custom cables you'll be pretty good at it by the time you're done. And you'll be able to fix them if they ever break.
Have a look on youtube and instructables.com for soldering tutorials, it's a great skill to have.
