so this is one of those, "uh-oh, i'm old" questions: when someone like DJ B.C. does, e.g., a mashup of the beatles and the beastie boys and seems to have isolated vocal and instrumental tracks...has he somehow gotten access to the stems (and if so, where are these stems to be found?) or is he and others like him using eq/software to carve out just the vocal freq's?

I would assume it's the latter, unless it's some kind of officially licensed remake.
By the way, here's the best mash-up ever:

thanks pricklyrobot, and that mashup is amazing! so do you or anyone happen to know what this software is? or are people just using generalized eq plug-ins (somehow i have trouble imagining hardware entering the equation) for this specific application?

There are a lot of stems floating around the internets. Check the bittorrents. One of the coolest is for Superstition because you can actually hear the distinct clavinet parts that Stevie Wonder played (I think there are 3 or 4 of them, some double-tracked).

you should also be able to find tutorials for isolating vocals etc on youtube..
there are lots of tricks do do with stereo imaging etc - eg as a starting point to one possibility - vocals are usually mixed in the absolute center of the mix.. so if you cut out the sides.. its possible youll be left with a pretty clean vocal.
but yeah.. there are loads of stems and acapellas around online where someone else has already doen the work.

Just so you know, anything from the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games has high quality stems, usually found through the typical channels for finding illicit/pirated stuff on the web, which we are forbidden to talk about.
