Digital multi trackers acting as real time fx processors

I always liked the idea of using equipment that is multi functional, so naturally I'm curious if any of the digital multi trackers out there can function as an fx units in real time. I figure that when I eventually move onto better recording equipment, I can get a single unit that can function as a basic mixer, multi-tracker, and effects processor. Unfortunately, after doing some research it seems that most only allow the fx to be applied to a track once its recorded. Are there any out there with that differ in this regard?

I've owned the Boss BR864 and BR900 and the Tascam 2488. You can use any of them as an effects processor. When tracking you can choose whether or not to print the FX to the track.

The Tascam has 8 tracking inputs, in the Boss line only the BR1600 has more than two tracking inputs. All three machines let you earmark a stereo line in as a submixer input that does not pass through any FX or EQ.

I have no experience with Korg, Fostex or Zoom units.

Thanks for the info, I've actually taken the time to download the manual for some of the boss units you mentioned, but they where never explicit about whether or not they where capable of functioning in such a manner.

Any of the Roland VS series models I have used have real-time effects capabilities. I have used the VS1880, VS2000, VSR-880, and VS-2480. They differ in the number of effects available (2 up to 8 depending on unit) and the number of inputs. However, the effects are available through optional VS8F-2 or VS8F-3 cards that cost around $100-$200 each. Each card gives you two separate effects processors. VS series units can be found for cheap compared to their original retail price because (according to a local retailer) 'if it isn't Pro-Tools it's not worth using.' But of course they are very useful and great products.
