acoustic foam setting up questions

Post by XZit » Sun Nov 14, 2010 10:13 pm

Sup people.
I haven't posted for a while on here mainly because I haven't been able to produce any tracks for the longest time! :|
But I am moving this month to a new place where I can actually have a full on studio for once!
So I've been brainstorming how to setup my studio and I have a good idea--yet the studio will be shared in the living room region, so I need to isolate the sound a little bit, so I need some acoustic foam.

I'm not really sure how to setup the acoustic foam--does anyone have a link, or ideas?
I was thinking about putting in a corner foam system (or 2) like this:
http://prosoundfoam.com/Pro_Sound_Foam_ ... tails.aspx
and a couple basic square pieces to put up on the wall.
i.e. http://prosoundfoam.com/2_in_Pro_Sound_ ... tails.aspx

I don't want to go overboard with the acoustic foam if not necessary (mainly due to cost etc.)

Mainly I will need to isolate excess bass to the upstairs (my new place is essentially a basement w/other individual living upstairs). Eventually I want to also have a mic recording area (that's a bit down the road)

Thanks for any input into this. I'm just a little overwhelmed with all the acoustic foam choices, and I've never set up anything like this before. My studio(s) in the past have just been small little bedroom studios but now I'm taking it to the next level.

Thanks again!

You don't want acoustic foam, that's used for managing the reflections of sound in a space. You want to stop the sound getting from one space to another, so you need to first of all make an air tight seal between the two of them, and then get as much mass and dampening between them as you can. If you're trying to stop bass going through the ceiling I'd recommend a floating ceiling with a couple of layers of drywall with Green Glue between them. Or check out Acoustiblok.

isolating all bass from going up stairs isn't a big deal-I don't need to make it completely sound proof. Its not their bedroom directly above the studio. I will check out acoustibloks for sure though. Looks like a good idea to put up on the ceiling.
I do need something for managing reflections of the sound in the space though so I will likely need a couple pieces of acoustic foam.

The floating ceiling is a good idea-yet I can see it becoming expensive? I've checked out a couple pre-fabricated options online. If I could come up with a system that uses green glue that's relatively inexpensive that would prob. be ideal.

thanks for any input!
