Re: mic for gritty sound?
I've loved this one:

Got mine for well <$100 on ebay a few years back, have used it for lots of stuff, from vocals to micing cabs, to recording odd radio noise for sampling.
But really, I would just grab something from a second-hand electronics store--especially old PA mics from stores, schools, etc.

I use mostly crystal/ceramic element mics into stacked preamps or amp simulators for my super gritty vox.

^I've bought many a mic here and have always come away happy. I wouldn't spend more than 50 for a good ceramic/crystal element mic.

Re: mic for gritty sound?
thanks tallow, it's nice to have a feedback of somebody that bought from there. i was looking at that at the timr of your comment.
i'm looking for this kind of mic because it will. be the signature sound of the project live. i love to experiment in the studio but live i would like to have no more then 3 mics, 4 top

Anything with the name 'Altec" fetches the ducats on ebay. You have to troll Ham fests and such to get them for a reasonable price.
I have this one:

Very gritty stuff, especially into one of those PAiA Toob Heads.

Re: mic for gritty sound?
did you mod something in the tube head? because when i tried to drive a hi-z (guitar, single coil danelectro u2) instrument, i had better result by using the akai s600 to get line impedance, in that case.

Re: mic for gritty sound?
Nope, no mods. Just 1/4" out of mic into the first input, feed output 1 into input 2 (that's the trick).

Oy. A few years back, when I had a full-time job and my GAS was in full swing, I thought I was nuts for buying so much gear. Now I realize I should have bought multiples of everything.novielo wrote:man the altec is fetching 200$ on ebay!
Sorry to have led you astray, I was under the naive impression that that mic still flew beneath the radar.

Re: mic for gritty sound?
no problem code green, nowaday anything that is not made anymore or that is pre-90 is instantly declared vintage. it's harder and harder to find odd things for some flavour in art. our world is becoming so clean and sterile ( i can't even take the celular phone that are ment to go in the land field because of some obscure law about private privacy, i just wanted to make a sculpture out of them not attacking south corea with radio-active smoke detector!!!!
)
everybody knows that something that is vintage must have somekind of magic/ stellar dust/ apolo technology/ powder of crocodile skin/ hobgoblin dried spit , when you power it on. my french tost are so better when i use my non automatic 1940's toaster. hehehe

Re: mic for gritty sound?
Any sound clips of this on vox , guitar etc? Is this sort of a distorted jack white/black keys kind of gritty vocals sound?Anything with the name 'Altec" fetches the ducats on ebay. You have to troll Ham fests and such to get them for a reasonable price.
