Prophet 08 VS Poly Evolver

Post by HUBA » Tue Sep 15, 2009 3:32 am

Exactly what does the prophet have over the poly evolver except more voices?

Will the poly evolver sound just the same as "half a prophet" when only those things that are found on the prophet are active?

CAN the poly evolver be treated that way if wanted?

the analog section of P'08 doesn't go through A/D like on evolver. how much that improves the sound is subjective, i suppose.
i wouldn't expect the polyevolver's analog section to be just like a P'08, either. similar, but not quite the same.

Having had both the P’08 and an couple evolvers (not PEK though), I think the sound difference is significant. Not only does it go through the converters is also goes through a digital effects section. The P’08 sounds more analog to me than just using the analog section of the evolver. However, while the P’08 sounds nice, don’t expect P5. It is a much tamer well mannered synth ala the Matrix 1000 that it shares very similar chips with. I’d compare its sound to the later DCO synths that are available cheap not the CEM/SSM per function synths. With that in mind, I think the evolver is a much more interesting synth, in sound and capabilities. However, the analog section on its own doesn’t sound as nice to me but than again I don’t think the DSI analog sound is comparable to the classic big polys anyway so...

I'm going through the same doubts right now.

I've been a Virus TI user for about 2 years. Really got a lot out of my TI POLAR... but I think I've reached a point where I'm just bored with it and want something else. Something simpler, in a sense, that I can fully edit with the knobs on the top panel and not have to rely on menus to program.

I've always been interested in DSI, and am wondering if I should go for the P08 or the PEK.

What draws me to the PEK is the fact that it's 4-part multitimbral, and it has more sound-shaping features than the P08.

BUT... the P08 is fully analog and has 8 voices.

I haven't had the opportunity to play with a P08, but I have used a PEK and loved it. I still have my doubts though. Part of the appeal of replacing the virus was to simplify things... not sure if getting the PEK will achieve this.

What to do, what to do? Anyone else want to chime in and help out?
