Re: Roland space echo vs boss space echo
the boss space echo does not compare to the real thing at all period
its certainly a nice pedal, but it in no way gets close (my bass player owned the boss, one of my friends owns the real thing, we did a back to back for several hours one day)
this is not like the difference between digital and analog synths, this is night and day

No one cares, no one sympathizes,
so you just stay home and play synthesizers.

Re: Roland space echo vs boss space echo
Afraid I cannot contest to having experience with either, but I had heard from numerous sources that only the UAD model software comes close to the real deal.
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

Re: Roland space echo vs boss space echo
A guitarist whose band I mix has an RE-301 and the RE-20, and he thinks they're close enough that he doesn't use the 301 unless he needs to use sound on sound. I bought an RE-20 after he brought them both into the studio when we were recording, it's not exactly the same but it sounds really good.
As soon as I used the Eventide Timefactor though the RE-20 was for sale, that thing sounds amazing.

I owned both myself and honestly thought they were not "night and day". The Boss came really close to my RE-501 and I thought it sounded awesome.

Re: Roland space echo vs boss space echo
when properly functioning w/ new tape indeed, the difference is very subtle.
the differences come in when the tapes wear or stretch, weak motor(s), worn pinch-rollers etc....causes the machine to sputter and whir a bit, and this modulates the echoes unpredictably.
as an example, here's a recent recording I made of an OB-Xa thru an RE-301 which has the pinch-roller overtightened on purpose. I did this because my 301 was recently serviced, and is too clean sounding for the effect I want. I have an extra new tape, so now I have an "old" stretchy tape, too.
you can hear the 'water droplet' sound that is the result of tape slippage. Also some motor wind-up and feedback overload, and lots of spring verb. I also fed the mixer's AUX send back in to itself at times to intensify the effect, as well as an occasional delay from a Kurzweil Rumour at key points where I wanted it - but not throughout, as the 301 is doing the damage 95% of the time here (along w/ mixer feedback).
it's kind of long; i was 'meandering':

Re: Roland space echo vs boss space echo
sounds great shaft
I really need to get my re-201 serviced I just don't have the right tension on the tape and need to demag the heads.
I will say I've owned a couple re-301s, 501, 150, 101 and honestly nothing is like the re-201... for me it's got the best sound of any tape echo just magic I tell ya.
I wouldn't want to compare it to a boss digital echo honestly I know it's wouldn't be the same. If tape echo is a huge part of your sound there is no substitute! just like if you're into analog synths there is no substitute.
but for the price and convenience the boss one does sound pretty good and I wouldn't blame anyone for using one

Re: Roland space echo vs boss space echo
so, ca 50% say it's close, 50% say it's nowhere close. I tried to try a re-20, but the god damn idiot clerc refused to take the pedal out of the boss demo chain so I could try it with a synth "with a synth? this is a guitar pedal man.." god bless guitarists and their utter ignorance to 95% of the world of music.
anyway, this is slightly off topic, but I've been thinking about selling my boss RV-5 and DD-6 and replace with a RE-20, but I'm unsure if I'll miss the reverse delay of the dd-6...
now, tallow is gonna tell me to just get an VF-1 or two and get it over with, maybe time to turn advice into actual choices soon, eh?

Re: Roland space echo vs boss space echo
Get a Timefactor instead. 7 delay models and a looper, you won't have to miss the reverse delay and you'll have a tape echo that sounds better than the RE-20.

Re: Roland space echo vs boss space echo
I used to own a RE-201 about 10 years ago, then i owned the new RE-20, which i dispensed with, as i didn't like the COSM emulation, and then this came along and it's really good, captures the sound of the RE-201 perfectly.
