Dave Smith Mopho Vs. Korg R3
So I was arguing with a friend that owns a Korg R3 that a Dave Smith Mopho would have been a much better buy. He disagrees. I mean, I'd rather have an analog synth for the genre of music that he does (electronic hardcore and whatnot), and the demos of the Mopho I've seen sound monumentally better than the R3. Any thoughts?
I'm a synth newborn, a stillborn if not.

The R3 is actually an awesome synth, and you can play chords on it which can be good playing in a band setting. I personally don't get the hype about the mopho, it's just all the boring bits from the evolver with none of the good bits. Sure it's analogue, but that doesn't make it better. If I was given a choice between those two I'd pick the R3.

Though I would much prefer the interface of a mopho keyboard, if i had to choose between the two as my ONLY synth,
I'd pick the R3 for sure.

Definitely gotta agree with you there. I don't know why people who are about to plop down $800 for a MoPho keyboard wouldn't spend another $200 on a legit Pro~One. I mean, the MoPho obviously has a few more features (MIDI, Sub Oscillators, more routing, feedback etc), but it lacks the 37 keys and still has even less knobby control. Plus it doesn't sound as good. Likewise, they could also spend only another $100-150 on a used Evolver keyboard, which you could definitely debate between if thinking about a Pro~One.Stab Frenzy wrote:It's just all the boring bits from the evolver with none of the good bits.

Totally weird comparison. Comparing the R3 to a Mopho is like comparing Bruce Lee to Jacky Chan. Or Bruce Lee to Bruce Willis. What your friend really needs is a synth with supersaw.

Totally Agree! I do like the Mopho for aggressive bass, but overall I would much rather have an Evolver or an R3.Stab Frenzy wrote:The R3 is actually an awesome synth, and you can play chords on it which can be good playing in a band setting. Yeah, Evolver has gotta be one of, if not, the best synthesizers produced currently. Especially in terms of analog (which obviously doesn't have much competition). And before someone jumps in bringing up Moog's new stuff, they're not really anything new per se. Whereas the Evolver is actually not trying to rehash old gear like the Prophet line is.
But yeah, with the R3's polyphony, I think it would be a better choice strictly speaking in that price range and only owning one thing. Here's an idea; you could talk to your friend about buying a MoPho desktop to go with his R3. That would solve my biggest problem with it (keys). See, if that was his only board, he wouldn't even be able to comfortably control a polyphonic VST IMO.

Re: Dave Smith Mopho Vs. Korg R3
Bought a mopho keyboard. I love it. Having owned some vintage synths I would never own one again. They're nice, sound nice, but never fit into my modern life of NRPN controlling VSTs with automation.
Also, I hated all DSI equipment that is encoder-based. Mopho keyboard being 90% pots was a big selling point.
definitely weird to compare with an R3 though. I have a microkorg as well as my mopho and they complement each other nicely.
