Prophet 5 versus Prophet 600
I'm in the market for a new poly synth. I own a Juno 60 and have access to a Polysix. I want something from another family and preferably have two oscillators. I've been dreaming about a prophet for years and was hoping that some folks could give me some insight so I can make up my mind between a prophet 5 rev 3 and prophet 600.
First thing- I have the money for the prophet 5 and found a really good deal on one, but If I can get an awesome synth for less than that (prophet 600?), I'm definitely goin with the less expensive route.
I usually build my sequences in Ableton and then route that to my synths for tweaking. The prophet 600 has midi but the 5 doesn't. With the aid of a cv/midi converter this wouldn't be a problem though, right?
If someone could give me a general opinion on both synths and if the prophet 5 is really that much better than the 600 for the money, that would help.

If you have the money and can get a "good deal" on the 5 rev 3, go for the 5. It's only money and the 5 is a far superior product to the 600 in many ways. Buy a Kenton MIDI/CV and you are good to go for sequencer lines. For pads and chords obviously you will have to play it. Or get a MIDI retrofit.

It's one of those things where the 600 has most of the ideas they put into the 5 and it's even smaller, but sonically it might not be as nice overall. I'd say go for the P5.

+1 on P-5 and a midi retrofit if you use a computer for sequencing.

Apples and oranges really, in my mind. Or Mercedes Benz vs Honda Fit.

If you can afford the Prophet 5, absolutely go for it. If you can afford a Rev. 2, even better.

I vote for P5 just so prices stay low on P600s so I can afford to replace mine if need be.

Re: Prophet 5 versus Prophet 600
Thanks everyone. I kinda figured that would be the answer. I think I'll pull the trigger and go with the 5.
Re: Prophet 5 versus Prophet 600
Hmm... well, I was going to recomend the P600, but I don't wanna change someone's mind if they are already set on buying a nice P5.
Re: Prophet 5 versus Prophet 600
Im gonna put it out there... I was in the market for a P5... I went to get a P5, i left with a P600... Yes the P5 is kinda more open, yet it has slightly more bass... For what I wanted at the time... the P600 had the sound... I don't understand why the p5 is so high, and the p6 is so low... lol. In my mind, if Im gonna spend that much more money for what i'm getting, i'd rather spend that on a Jupiter 8 for a good deal.

Re: Prophet 5 versus Prophet 600
To add my own little belated opinion... if those people that are working on improving the P600 DAC (God speed you Christian Soldiers, btw) come up with the promised improvements I would honestly say that there wouldn't be much between the P5 Rev.3 and the P600. This of course means that anyone without Rev.1 & Rev.2 will automatically become a hack and a fraud

Re: Prophet 5 versus Prophet 600
I love my 600 but I'd love it even more with improvements. Not sure of the scope of that project but ideally a noise source would be added. I'd be happy with a digital one...Dr. Phibes wrote:Er yeah whatever it is that causes all that digital chicanery.
