Will a full Mother-32 rack w/3 PSUs and wood finish like that cost the same as my previous house? Most likely.

wow... a Mother-32 is $599 and a rack kit is $69. I'm going to talk to the wife about moving to Norway if one can buy a house for under $2K

during the holidays I received an offer from Musician's Friend for 20% of a total purchase and a full set of Mothers for $1500 was tempting, they're a great value but so are the Rolands (which to me are perhaps a bit more interesting maybe) and either way both seem a great way to get into the modular world. personally though I'm likely going to put that money towards a Make Noise system and then probably buy everything from Mutable Instruments and Harvestman and so on to be forever poor and unable to visit beautiful Norway.

having said that, I just received another 20% off coupon... and now I have some serious contemplating to do, like how many Mothers does one need? just One? or maybe Two with an expansion case? a set of Three? or None and stick with the plan? ...s**t.

I would go for the Make Noise system.

having wasted much of yesterday on this, that's my conclusion as well.

The Roland System 500 sounds great....but it has no sequencer while 3 Mother 32s would have 3 different sequencers with 3 individual voices. With the Roland System 500 you will have to find a separate sequencer...which I'm not sure why in all the videos promoting the thing they were showing the old system being run with sequencers but never included it in the reissue.

A reissue Model 104 would be pretty redundant in the world of Eurorack. There are a lot of cheap, basic, unquantised sequencers out there already, and a lot of fuller-featured, complex sequencers that run rings around the 104. And then there's things like the Analog 4, Cirklon etc that aren't Euro but excel in sequencing it. I think Roland made the right choice in leaving the 104 out.

x3 Mother 32 seems to be the obvious answer...3 voices+3 sequencers versus 1 voice with no control...

If you're thinking about going Make Noise, I would certainly consider waiting for their 0-Coast module.

Why not both ? Get the full Roland and a single Moog.

Apples and oranges.

Moog:
The EGs are weird...AD or ASD only. The HPF resonance requires patching to work properly (read reviews). Almost no submixing capabilities (super important in a modular). Sounds like a Moog.

Roland:
HPF is like a Juno, no resonance no CV control. No MIDI or sequencing. More sophisticated LFO than Moog. Decent submixing of both audio and CV on each module. It appears two single VCO/single EG voices can be created with just those modules. The effects module is a bonus. Sounds like a Roland.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.
