Vocoder help!

Post by EricMc » Mon Jul 28, 2008 3:01 am

So, I just got off tour and am done with my Microkorg, it has done me well the past couple of years but I am done with it.

I have a Warp Factory I am going to start working on this week to find a good vocoder sound out of, but that isn't why I am posting here.

I need a good vocoder, and I wanted to see what people here would recommend.

I am looking for something that can work well backing a group of vocals or a choir of vocals but could also be used to do a distorted robot voice.

I am really looking for versatility here, but if you have a favorite vocoder please tell me why you love it.

Also, I promise not try and sell my Micro Korg on here when I get a new vocoder.

The V-Synth XT has the Roland VC-2 board built into it which does some pretty good vocoding. It's the same as the VP-550 that Air have been using on their latest tour, except that you can edit the XT vocoder a lot more deeply.

I'm a big fan of the WarpFactory, and find it pretty versatile. Is there a particular reason that you're writing it off before you've spent any time with it?

My budget is in the 2 grand range, we aren't touring this winter to finish Act 2 and I am just going to finish my set up in this time.

See our singer and I sat down with it and we came to the conclusion that it wasn't going to work out, but man I honestly always look at it when we're home and want to give it a shot.

I may sit down with it again.

currently the nord mod (as a vocoder and modular fx processor) and the old Digitech Studio Vocalist (as a vocal harmony/detune and pitch shifter) covered most of the creative vocal needs. The digitech may not sound as modern as the newer TC/Digitech (even as the one in the Yamaha S-900), but I still comfortable with that. For more comfort, the EX version will talk to the PC better. But I'm fine editing with the nice big screen. The same with the Nord Mod, it may not be the best sounding or flexible vocoder by the 16 band vocoder module alone. But for distorted robot voice, the flexibility of the modular design is rewarding. Since it even able to design it's own vocoder aside from the available module. Edited using a nice software editor. Since the budget is 2K, the Nord Mod Keyboard (G1 to me) would be more flexible and versatile with all those knobs.

Although I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise, I'm just curious why you're giving up on the Korg? What is it that you don't like any more that you did before?

yeah, processed through the Nord Mod, it will have a new life :) also it will going to be a nice controller for the Micro Mod too.

I've just had a bad run with it the past few shows, I really don't like the sounds I am getting out of it now.

I am thinking about getting a rackmount MS 2000 for the road, that is the way I am kind of leaning now, but I am really interested in hearing the Nord Modular System.
