Hardware Granular Synthesis

Hi,

is there any hardware products, that is,- not a digital software program-, that is granular synthesis? i don't know of such a product besides all the digital methods, max/msp etc
but am wondering if there is a dedicated real granular synth.
i tried a search but couldn't find anything(s**t searching methods).
or is the closest I'm going to get to a hardware granular synth, is a hardware DSP processor(with other synthesis/processing)?
if so, which ones are best, and/or cheapest?
Also, what would be involved in having a DSP processor custom built? with or without a granular synth?

I had a Virus TI Polar for a few months, and I believe there were granular oscillators available. If I recall, they added that functionality via a software update. You might want to check that out.

The virus ti does have granular oscillators... pretty fun.

Its still software running it.... how could it ever be otherwise?

There are 2 granular architectures, with 2 variations each, in Harm Visser's synth package for the Korg OASYS PCI. They are, of course, plug-ins that run on a DSP card in a now long-superceded OS environment. That said, the sound is excellent.

The Nord Modular series can be programmed to do granular synthesis.


The modular Eventide effects units can be programmed to do granular synthesis, and quite a few of their presets make use of such techniques.

also i was thinking about getting a sr16 for $50. i thought perhaps you could do granular synthesis on that, in a basic form perhaps, akin to Squarepusher.
There's that new module coming in Oct 2008 from motm, a cloud generator, though its not a granular synth-module but something different.

Yeah. I don't think a lot of people understand what the V-Synth is really.
I had posted an example of the V doing some of it's granular thing on here somewhere or other not to long ago.
But yeah, it's basically a granular meets VA meets weirdo Physical Modeling synth (AP Synthesis).

The time trip pad is basically a fancy means of manipulating the index of what might as well be called a "graintable".
The variphrase encoding modes of "lite", "solo", "backing", and "ensemble" basically streamline how the grains are treated in some ways.
But yeah, you can lock on single grains, jump around between the grains in weird ways, etc. etc.

There's a lot more to the V than it's granular abilities, but that's definitely a BIG part of what makes it unique.

Then it's granular thanks to the effects, not the machine itself -and Squarepusher has an Eventide Orville.
