Thinking of flogging my SY77

Post by Synchro » Fri Nov 07, 2008 2:33 pm

I have a Yamaha SY77 that I've had for a couple of years. Generally it's in great condition, plus I've done a fair amount of work on it (I'm an electronics guy), in particular replacing all 80-odd panel buttons, the screen backlight, and replacing that horrible captive mains cable with an IEC socket. It's got a chip in one end cheek, a couple of keys are a little sticky (right at the top end, I can probably fix them), and one LED doesn't work (no great loss). That all sounds bad, but it looks and sounds great and works perfectly. The keyboard on it is particularly good - nicely weighted, great aftertouch feel. The floppy drive works (and there's still some bloke selling belts for it on eBay), I have the "Sax 1" card set, an original printed manual, and zillions of sysex format sounds on CD.

It's a great sounding synth, remarkably un-cheesy, very powerful as you probably know. I'm thinking of selling because it's a bit too big and I'm looking for a better controller.

So the question is (before I stick ads on here or eBay), how much does anyone think it's worth?

I'm in SE London, UK.

I put down €500 for mine some 5 years ago. I dunno.. €300 ain't bad I think. It may be in good condition, but it's still a dated machine. I found the FM bit interesting in the days, but while a few handy aspects of the SY77/99's FM aren't available yet in all softsynths, I still think these hardware FM synths are loosing in favor of softsynths..

Hi Synchro

Selling/buying advice goes in the Buyer's Guide forum. I'll just move this topic over there.

Cheers

clubbedtodeath: thanks, sorry for the mispost - been coming here for ages but only just signed up!

I'd be pretty happy with €300. I've got FM8, which is excellent, but there's still something about real hardware. Mind you FM8 takes up and awful lot less space...

Thanks.

By way of a follow-up, I just posted it (with niggles fixed) on the for sale forum and on eBay.
