Wise choices are made by those who seek guidance

Post by Jabberwalky » Sat Dec 20, 2008 10:23 pm

I've been wanted an MEK since it's release sometime last year. I've got no spare money for new synthesizers so I'll have to drop out some things to afford it. I want a mono synth that's capable in terms of midi, patch bank size, editability. If I unload my Juno 60 and my Minikorg, I think I'd be able to afford one. My an1x covers pretty much anything the Juno does, as close as a VA can be. This could easily replace the minikorg, which is great sounding but limited synth.

I always figured I'd hold on to the minikorg though, as it may be worth some astronomical price years from now, whereas the Mek will have no resale profits.

While I'm at it, is there anyone interested in a Juno60+Minikorg straight up trade for an MEK?

So is this essentially a for sale post in disguise? (not a bad trade if it is)

The more I have used the MEK, the more I have realized it's potential, and ability to make new and interesting sounds... and ultimately, for me, that has been its biggest asset (and the reason I still have it!). I didn't like the PEK because 4 voices was too many for the sound, and too few for the price... but the MEK just feels right... very compact, but capable of a MUCH wider range of sounds than you would ever get out of the minikorg (plus midi, patch storage, sequencer, etc.). My only complaint is the knobs, but it's not a huge deal.

I would say if you're interested in making new and interesting sounds, sell the minikorg first, and see how you fair (you could probably get at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the way there) (and then let me know about selling the juno 60  ). Though you're right, the price may go up on either synth, I think holding onto gear as an investment is not a good idea, and a waste of a good instrument.

I you're in this for investment purposes I'd suggest looking at other investment avenues.

If you're in this for the sake of making music than relative cash value and perceived future value shouldn't matter too much.

Investment isn't what I'm interested in. It doesn't have an impact on what I decide to sell or buy. I was just taking a jab at the outrageous ebay prices anymore.

ya, f**k it, I'm getting rid of the minikorg. Well, not before I sample about every possible sound I can get out of it.

Foolishly or not, I've never made a major effort to sample my sold pieces of gear... I may wish I still had those sounds available to me at a later point, but if I didn't commit them to a song in the first place, it's hard to be bothered to then sample everything possible beforehand. Kind of like, once out the door, that's it! It's ironic as I tend to use samples a lot in my actual songs! hmmm I need to start doing this... #-o
