Virus or Blofeld or other for these types of sounds...

Post by ex_action_figure » Mon Dec 29, 2008 12:42 am

I'm getting kind of sick of software, it does the job but I just program better on hardware I tend to explore more.
at the moment the I am all software except my little phatty but I want to get one 'go to' hardware synth
unfortunately I'm not able to really try out synths before I buy them the only music store in my area is guitar center and they never have anything good so I figured I'd ask around for some experienced answers. I write Fidget house bassline house and dubstep (not a big fan of genres but for the sake of clarity)
those of you not familiar here are some examples of the sounds I'm looking for:

Fidget

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8K4aqCAUSZU

just all about bass and really strong filters.

Bassline

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jkm9U-NsXXU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhTrrWIQrcY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2vQCwuVUkE I don't really like this one but the bassline sounds I'm trying to get are around :33 sec

I really thought my little phatty would excel at these sounds but it really doesn't come close :(

This tune kind of falls in-between bassline and fidget but it's that general wavetable business that I'm interested in

Dubstep

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ksMjm8XIeo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWQukgO1X6c
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1zA910Hx-E
massive tunes! These have me completely stumped..I have no idea how to come close to them they sound like wavetables?

I wish I could find shorter examples, I don't expect you guys to sit here and listen to every single song but maybe you can just fast forward though them to get a general idea.

I realize this is a wide palette of sounds, I'm wondering which synth would cover it the best...or maybe which combination of synths?

what do you guys think?

What do you already have and use?

I hear pretty complex step-sequencing/LFO shapes and automation, and IIRC, the knobs on the Phatty don't turn that fast.

Try a fast LFO, keytracked, saw wave, routed to PW or pitch, not too extreme.

What you hear don't have to be wavetables - it could be single-cycle samples, where different velocities could use different waveforms.

See if you can use my trick here: http://www.vintagesynth.com/forum/viewt ... 89#p483489

and of course, properly mixing bass is an art on itself. Don't let other things get in the way, and don't be afraid to cut everything below 50 Hz and then add a sinewave sub-bass later.
