$100 to blow at Guitar Center

Post by Hair » Fri Feb 27, 2009 5:19 pm

I just was given a $100 gift card to GC, any ideas? I'd be willing to put it towards something around $2-300. though a MoPho is tempting, I'll probably end up putting it towards a Mackie 1202, but I'd like to put it towards something I can make cool noises with instead of something I need.

Anyone know of any cool analog delays that'd be worth it to compliment my DL4, or well, any suggestions at all?

Other ideas I've had so far:

Boss SYB-5 - would prefer the 3 though, can anyone compare the two?
used Korg DSS-1 for $150 - about an hour away, thoughts on this beast?
used ER-1 for $120 about 2 hours away, I already have an EM-1, and I've heard these don't have a lot of punch?
used MicroKontrol for $125 I think
Korg NanoKontrol

Things I already have in that range:
mini KP (not really looking to get a Kaoscillator)
SM57s
Studio Projects VTB-1
Lots of modulation pedals (mostly phasers and envelope filters)

Out of that list, I would go for DSS-1. If it were my money though, I'd get a talkbox or an original Cry Baby wah.

Haha thanks, I actually already have both of those  I'm more of a guitar player than a synthesist, but I'm pretty happy with my guitar gear right now. It's looking like it's going to be the Mackie 1202 VLZ3 though, I really need a mixer for my electribes and such, and it'll be nice to be able to send things to the miniKP.. still open to suggestions though!

Reading about the DSS-1 really has me intrigued, but it's so huge!

I just suggested those because their next on my list. My music has been moving into a more funky direction lately. It was only a matter of time...

As for the Korg, it may be "huge", but it would be very worth it, I think. However, a good mixer is always a useful addition.

I'm sure I've mentioned this stuff before on here, but if you're going the DSS-1 route, does it come with floppy discs? That's a big plus to have some preloaded discs to get you started. I actually can't imagine if I would have gotten it without sample discs if I would've even bothered keeping and learning the thing. The discs are DD which are still fairly easy to come by on ebay but you might not have already. And there are sites you can download the discs for free but the program to do it won't run on anything after Windows 98, I believe, so if you don't have an old computer (or h**l, a floppy drive these days!), that won't work for you either.

Also, you're right it's big and heavy if that's a concern and as you can see by how much they go for, I don't think I'd get it for a collectors piece  Having said all this, I love mine and will never sell it.

PS. the disc drives are the only thing that is known to fail as far as I know, but if there is no disc to test it with, you won't know if that works either. That'll set you back another $80 or so from Route 66 if it turns out the drive is bad.

I'm sure the drive is at least somewhat universal. In which case I will sell you as many as you want for $5.

$100 should buy you about a dozen Behringer pedals. ;)

I like the DSS-1 idea.

Get a Mopho, they are super fun. Fat bass sounds and extensive sequencing controls.
