analog monosynth in 500usd range

Post by harness » Sun Mar 29, 2009 3:48 pm

+/- 150usd
prefer desktop/tabletop(limited space)
fx unimportant(I have outboard)
prefer hands on control
midi preferred but not a deal breaker

current sound generators: virus c, juno 106, yamaha rs7000, akai and emu samplers, various vsts

off the top of my head, only the sh101, mopho, and the upcoming doepfer dark energy come to mind.

Spectral Audio Neptune II! The Evolver and maybe the MFB Synth II are others to consider as well. I've heard nothing but good things about the Neptune II, really wish I could try one out.

SH-09 is still relatively inexpensive, plus it's a nice compact form. You could probably get one cheaper than a 101.

I'd say the typically cheaper monosynths are:

ARP axxe, solus

Realistic MG-1

some of the lower Yamaha CS series (5, 10)

In your price range, you could easily get a CS-15... that would be a nice variation on what you've already got... The cs-5/10 are fun, but too limited.

Also, if you're considering the DSI stuff, I would definitely hold out for a MEK rather than desktop... worth the $100 more or so just for the interface.

The MEK, for what it is, is arguably the best mono money can buy... but everyone's own mileage will vary.
Do you even post on vse bro?

I just sold a Technosaurus Microcon II in your price range. 100% analog, MIDI, knobby and about the size of a VCR tape. Keep your eye out for one of those.

Used MEKs sell for around $800-900, used Desktop Evolver go for around $400. I'm not so sure that you could easily get a CS-15 for $500 either.

No one cares, no one sympathizes,
so you just stay home and play synthesizers.

What do you think of it so far? I liked it for bass. It's surprisingly ballsy for a little synth.

I like it a lot. It's simple in a good way and great for bass. Running it through my mixer with the gain cranked all the way up brings a lot out of it too. Definately a keeper.

+ 1 for the Waldorf Pulse. No keyboard but great sounds and filter.
And I may just have a Pulse Plus to sell.... :D
