Subwoofer

Post by Sir Nose » Wed Apr 08, 2009 6:41 pm

I am looking for a speaker and cab that will handle the low end well. I would like 20Hz but may deal with 30Hz as the bottom end. What amps, crossovers, filters work well? I want something that move large volume of air. Something to give the sound sensing organ that is the listener's skin a chance to feed the brain some info.

Oh yeah and all of this for a budget price. $500 give or take. Still open to recommendations out of this range for future consideration.

Thanks :)

Studio or live?

$500 is just scraping the very low end for live subwoofers. You won't find anything new that cheap. I just paid $550 for a single used Mackie powered sub (amp, crossover all built in) and it's considered by most pros as complete garbage. For a "budget" setup you should expect to pay well over $1000.

You need massive wattage and large boxes to really move air that low and you'll find that very few subs are spec'ed flat down to 20 Hz. Many can get into the 30-40 range at about -10dB from flat, you can compensate somewhat by even more wattage and EQ.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

For Live app.

Yeah, I know I'm in the way low end budget wise. That's where I am at. Used in good condition is always fine with me. I was definately planning on buying used. I am looking for a creative solution from the folks on here. Any help is much appriciated.

Thanks for the idea about going with more power and using the EQ to bring up the 20Hz-40Hz range.

Most positive person EVER? Or most sarcastic? Sorry for the off-topic comment but that one just weirded me out.
