yamaha TG-33?
I'm looking for a cheap digital polysynth to offset/compliment my evolver's sound..
And I stumbled upon someone mentioning the TG-33. . There's not much info around about it, so I come to you lot for experience/thoughts?

I had one for a while loved it. Like the other Yamahas of the day it's kind of a pain to program, but it's got a really nice unique texture, and the vector joystick is great. Unisyn helps immensely with programming. I used it for autechre type stuff and it performed wonderfully. They're found dirt cheap also.

All you need to know here.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

I actually would recommend SY-edit for programming, due to it being free.

Re: yamaha TG-33?
If you have 32 brain cells that can work simultaneously, you should be fine (and about 80% of KSS would be SOL). I have made it a point to use lots of hard to edit synths, and the TG33 is pain free, as all you need to know is printed on the unit itself.
It sounds great for gritty doom and gloom pads, bizarre a*s FX, and some nasty sounding leads. Paul McGullough's soundtrack for Night of the Living Dead has tons of TG on it.

Brains can be used like a "stress ball," but only once.

Re: yamaha TG-33?
does £150 for one of these sound like a good deal?
also, are there any reliability or build issues i need to consider?
thanks

That's too much. Mine ebayed for $50 last year and I miss it now. They are built quite solid and a great buy.

Re: yamaha TG-33?
the TG/SY synths are great. My friend had an SY35 for a short period of time and I got to tinker with it a lot, definitely great sounding. Its got a sort of lo fi crunch to it that I really digged, think twitch era ministry, like that "shitty akai sampler" sound that everyone loves.
editing it isnt very hard at all, its very logical, though one thing that confused me at first was the 4 part layout, I would wonder why the f**k i wasnt hearing any changes and then i'd realize I was editing the wrong part. but once you wrap your head around that (which like tallow said, takes maybe 32 brain cells), you are good to go.

No one cares, no one sympathizes,
so you just stay home and play synthesizers.

You'd get one for well under 100 quid on Ebay, maybe about 50 if you're lucky. They're a Yamaha so will be pretty reliable unless someone has been really careless with it.colmon wrote:does £150 for one of these sound like a good deal?

Anyone else noticed how the the LFO speed param gets reset when you select a new oscillator waveform?

and if you have less hen 32 brain cells working you can also use the "random" function.

Re: yamaha TG-33?
Holy c**p, I've owned a sy35 and two tg 33's before, and recently I picked up a sy22 locally from an original owner, however this is the first time I've actually delved into the little 2op fm section. I've finally kind of stumbled upon sounds which are extremely similar to the pss 270-680 series keyboards, and my god is this thing a unholy noise machine. I'm kicking myself for not just sticking with the first tg33 I picked up
. I'm far too stupid and impatient to actually get anything out of full blown 4-6 op fm synths, but damn do I love some 2op. This synth definitely gets my recommendation. Honestly I think they're worth paying around 100-130 for, although they can occasionally be had for cheaper. You get a vector synth, a 2op fm synth, multi-timbral operation, and midi for that price, and mean while there are schmucks on ebay trying to sell midi-less pss series for around the same price.
We'll always be remembered, we'll always be dismembered.
Re: yamaha TG-33?
yep. this thing is pretty good (once put through logic autofilter and plenty of chorus)
