Looking for advice on choosing a poly-synth

Post by Herbert West » Tue May 19, 2009 10:05 am

Hey, I have a Jupiter 6 that I am looking to unload for something different. I've been looking into VA synths, but there are so many options it makes my head hurt, haha. Access, Alesis and Waldorf are a few companies I've been really eyeing. I like creating weird ambient noises, but I would like a synth great for poly-bass stuff too. Maybe some decent Rhodes type emulation. I've also been considering trying to get an Oberheim Xpander. But I want to stray away from anything too 80's cheesy sounding, I don't care for pads or fake sounding strings and that sort. Just my opinion, not trying to knock anyone else's taste. :D

So basically, I was hoping people could tell me their favorite poly-synth, something with a lot of modulation options and capable of creating strange unearthly tones but also capable of creating nice stripped down and basic keys and bass. And I never really liked the polished 'Roland' sound I get from my JP-6, so something that sounds gritty and organic would be nice.

Yeah the Ion looks good, I was contemplating picking that up. Used prices for one are extremely reasonable. I've been pretty set on getting a Virus series synth, but I can't decide if its worth the extra money to get a TI model over a C series or the Snow. I'm very interested in Waldorf too, but I'm not too sure where to start.
